P.V.N.RAO  & BHARAT RATNA

THE LIBERETOR OF INDIAN ECONOMY

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

.      Venkata Narasimha Rao was one of the most learned men ever to lead India. He was a freedom fighter, a scholar, an  intellectual, a writer, a good administrator, and also  a polyglot.

4.      Being a well-read man and a seasoned politician; he knew pros and cons of India.

5.     He chose Dr. Manmohan Singh, a seasoned economist, to lead ministry of finance. If there was not a Narasimha Rao, there won't also be a Manmohan Singh in History of INDIA.

6.      He gave free hand to him and asked him to select and  employ Specialists and lead his own team. . He is the one who brought the right people into the right roles without seeing political affiliations. Subramanyam Swami as the Chairman of the Commission on Labor Standards and International Trade is another example.

7.      It was not easy for PV Narasimha Rao to do away with ages old socialist policies.

8.      Naturally , he had to take on many political colleagues and votaries of license raj. Still, he carried out liberalization and dismantled the license raj while heading a minority government.

9.      He handled separatist movements deftly. He resolved hijacking crises without accepting the demands of the terrorists, and it was only during the tenure of Rao that the separatist problem in Punjab was finally quelled.

10.  He was also censured by leftist and other Socialist  parties for making a way for capitalism in INDIA.

11.  Many foreign relation experts feared that it would send a wrong signal to socialist nations. But it didn’t—he handled that well.

12.  Well, as prime minister , he neither irked Russia nor capitulated to USA. He is also responsible for building relationships between India and Europe, the US, China, and Israel. We are reaping the commercial and strategic benefits of the same now. It was further bolstered by ATALJI, and now by present P.M. Mr. Rao was the  man who charted the track.

13.  Political analysts claim that during his tenure ; he had a  very formal relationship with Gandhi family - something that was unseen and unheard before.

14.  But, he stood his ground and proceeded to make a way for market reforms .

15.  In fact , he endured  and handled inner party rebellion , criticism and allegations for changing socialist trend very well.

16.  He refused to sign the CTBT (Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty) despite pressure from the US because the treaty is unfair and allows the Big Five to possess nuclear weapons while discouraging others from testing them. This eventually led to the Pokhran tests by the subsequent NDA government. This was acknowledged by Mr. Vajpayee as well.

Reasons for strain in the relationship between the SANIA MAINO lead Congress and Mr. Rao are listed below:

1. Reversing the License Raj of Nehru and Indira: What we call Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh’s “liberalization” was nothing but a systematic reversal of the license raj setup by Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

2. Ajodhya: Even though it was Rajiv Gandhi who opened the locks of the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ajodhya on February 1, 1986, it was during Narasimha Rao’s time that the dilapidated structure came tumbling down. Considering the extreme care Congress takes towards its secular image (which others pooh-pooh as pseudo-secular), they had to develop a new villain to blame for the Babri Masjid issue in 1992. Of course, they could not blame Rajiv Gandhi, who opened the locks and started this whole episode, so they painted Rao as the enemy of secularism. Rao, being a staunch and proud Hindu, made it easier to target him.

3. Ultimately, Congress harassed him during his last days, and further disrespected him by not allowing to  perform his last rites befitting for a past P.M. of INDIA. NDA built a memorial to atone that.

WHAT EMERGE

Nehru earned money , Indiraji earned fame, and money for her dynasty , Modiji is  earning respect , Atal ji won hearts, but rare are those who lost everything for the sake of their duty,  Mr. Narsimha Rao was one of them.

PV Narasimha Rao , a statesman , rightly deserves Bharat Ratna-the highest Indian civilian honour .

GOI today recognized this man's efforts and honours him with the credit he deserved to receive long ago.

The BJP has just done  that. It is not that PVN Rao is a BJP man... It just so happens that the BJP is now continuing with his unfinished AGENDA, and did what the Congress should have done long ago by honouring their one of the two best P.M.s. The other is LBS.

Perhaps : “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. “ : Eleanor Roosevelt.

  4. Enjoyed reading Majumdar's blog as always I do. His short, no nonsense and crisp focus on a subject enriches us and in most if not all the times echoes with my thoughts (not prior thoughts) ignited by his article.
PVNR was a does and never sought limelight as highlighted in "Nehru earned money , Indiraji earned fame,....."
Looking forward to such crisp comments of the author.
