NATO: A CRITICAL REVIEW MORE A DESTROYER OF DEMOCRACY SARASIJ MAJUMDER The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is established as an intergovernmental military alliance based on the Treaty between some North Atlantic Countries in Europe and USA, which was signed on 4 April 1949. NATO’s essential and enduring purpose was, (and is) to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means. Collective defense was (and is) at the heart of the Alliance and created a spirit of solidarity and cohesion among its members. If we turn back the pages of History, we find that The Soviets successfully tested their first nuclear device, called RDS-1 or “First Lightning” (codenamed “Joe-1” by the United States), at Semipalatinsk on August 29, 1949.
