NATO’s essential and enduring purpose was, (and   is) to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means. Collective defense was (and is)   at the heart of the Alliance and created a spirit of solidarity and cohesion among its members. If we turn back the pages of History, we find that The Soviets successfully tested their first nuclear device, called RDS-1 or “First Lightning” (codenamed “Joe-1” by the United States), at Semipalatinsk on August 29, 1949.
