  NATO: A CRITICAL REVIEW MORE A DESTROYER OF DEMOCRACY SARASIJ MAJUMDER   The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is established as an intergovernmental military alliance based on the Treaty between some North Atlantic Countries in Europe and USA,   which was signed on 4 April 1949. NATO’s essential and enduring purpose was, (and   is) to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means. Collective defense was (and is)   at the heart of the Alliance and created a spirit of solidarity and cohesion among its members. If we turn back the pages of History, we find that The Soviets successfully tested their first nuclear device, called RDS-1 or “First Lightning” (codenamed “Joe-1” by the United States), at Semipalatinsk on August 29, 1949. But India's foreign policy in the last 10+ years has been completely clear, transparent, and India has successfully used a policy that demonstrates its total independence, despite all international pressures, mainly from EU, USA, UN   and Islamist Countries. This strategic position is most visible in India's relations   with all international powers and on this front India has not only achieved   global respect, but India has also bought Russian oil despite USA’s threat of sanctions, supported Israel in the fight against Jihadi Terrorism, yet, increased trade relations with the countries of the Middle East, and presented itself to the world as a country that now don’t bow down to anyone.
