BJP’S FOREIGN POLICY-10+ YEARS

BJP’S FOREIGN POLICY

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

The domestic policy of the Modi government SOMETIMES DON’T APPEAR THAT CLEAR. But India's foreign policy in the last 10+ years has been completely clear, transparent, and India has successfully used a policy that demonstrates its total independence, despite all international pressures, mainly from EU, USA, UN  and Islamist Countries. This strategic position is most visible in India's relations  with all international powers and on this front India has not only achieved  global respect, but India has also bought Russian oil despite USA’s threat of sanctions, supported Israel in the fight against Jihadi Terrorism, yet, increased trade relations with the countries of the Middle East, and presented itself to the world as a country that now don’t bow down to anyone. And this is an important example of India's present subtle shift in  foreign policy—a basic change from NEHRU-GANDHI- UPA  era.

INDIA—CHINA---USA:--

America wants India to openly, and firmly  stand against China and it may  even want India to fight a war with China. Obviously, if India and China go to a war, both countries will be destroyed and America will directly benefit from this, because China's destruction means America's supremacy will remain intact in the global order. And USA will also sell Arms etc. to INDIA.

That is why America has been trying to declare Quad as a military alliance, while India's view is completely different. India wants the progress of the country first and India knows that war will push India into a  CUL-DE-SAC, from which it can come out only by getting almost  perished.

India has also taken bold, and firm  steps in protecting its borders against Chinese incursions.

OTHER GLOBAL FRONTS:-

India is  facilitating peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, integrating Africa into the G-20, and securing energy deals with Middle Eastern countries. These actions have not only strengthened India’s position on the global stage but also made it a strong contender for a permanent place in the Security Council and a  clear leader within the global South.

India is Politically, Economically, and Militarily stronger than UK, and France—two existing member of UNSC.

India has shown keen interest in building partnerships based on shared interests rather than aligning with any specific geopolitical bloc. India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, when he says that this approach is different from traditional alliances, it reflects India’s unique identity, which means Alliance only for the issue based  interest of India.

This is  rather a ‘ INDIA FIRST ’ policy, which is NEW.

This sentiment has been echoed by international experts such as Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who see India as an emerging superpower with distinct interests.. Such a stance reiterates India's aspiration to carve out its own space in international diplomacy. And India has achieved that, mostly.

India's active participation in various international forums including QUAD, BRICS, G-7 (as an Invitee) and SCO, to name only  a few important ones,  underlines India's commitment to a very balanced and inclusive global order. Through strategic engagement with these groups, India aims to present itself as an influential player on the world stage, capable of bridging divisions and promoting cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi's recent visits to various States has further highlighted India's important role as an economic and technological superpower, inviting investments and positioning itself as a viable alternative to counter China amid the changing global economic conditions.

Modi’s consistent advocacy for a RULES-BASED INTERNATIONAL ORDER AND PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE  highlights India’s commitment to promoting sovereignty, peace and an inclusivity in  Indo-Pacific region.

India’s diplomacy and strategy under Prime Minister Modi have been in favour of a more democratic and equitable global order by rejecting WESTERN HEGEMONY.

This approach seeks to achieve economic growth with all geopolitical realities, and the aim is establishing a stable equilibrium. Amid the backdrop of increasing global uncertainties ( RUSSIA--UKRAINE, ISRAEL-IRAN, BANGLADESH,  Chinese Bullying in South China Sea & Muslim problems in Europe), hot spots,  and potential conflict zones, India is strategically positioning itself to deal with these challenges cautiously and yet  robustly.

India's bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has received significant support from across the world, reflecting its growing influence and acceptance of its balanced stance on key global issues.

From meetings with Putin and Zelensky to engagements with major world leaders, India's pragmatic and neutral policy emphasizes cooperation with Western economies, as well as playing a key role in countering Chinese influence in Southeast Asia. This pragmatic diplomacy underlines India's commitment to a stable and inclusive global order, reinforcing its position as an important global player.

India's foreign policy under Prime Minister Modi is moving forward with a strong commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and adopting a balanced neutral  approach to international relations. As India moves forward in the complex landscape of global diplomacy, its actions and strategies reflect a clear vision towards establishing a more inclusive, democratic and peaceful world order.
