FARMERS’ PROTEST

IS ACTUALLY SIKH ROWDISM

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

In financial year 2023, the state of Uttar Pradesh had the highest production of cereals, lentils and pulses, with over 57 million metric tons. The total production of food grains in the country amounted to over 330 million metric tons that year. Some other states are not far behind.

However, for a long time, a narrative is created that PUNJAB is ANNADATA.

Let us look at the statistics presented below.

NOTE:-- The above details are compiled from scattered information available at various sites available in public domain. I have used 21-22 as base year for discussion.

Punjab is 3rd  in RICE, and Wheat; 6th in Potato—and that is all!! I have highlighted the state.

The farmers of Punjab Haryana, who comprise 4 percent of total farmers of India, corner 60 percent of MSP or minimum support price of more than ₹20/kg for only two  grains (rice +wheat) paid by FCI or Food Corporation of India.

The rest or 96 percent of grain farmers of India, in MP, UP, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan get 40 percent of MSP. Most of these farmers, who don't get MSP, sell their grain at market rates or ₹12/ kg.

There are poor farmers in Punjab also who are quite scared of losing MSP but compared to the number of poor farmers in other states they are negligible in numbers.

This is the secret of wealth of farmers of Punjab & Haryana.

There is more wealth concentrated in the hands of farmer cum middlemen who are mainly commission agents for the actual farmers.

These commission agents charge 8.5 percent brokerage from all farmers (rich or poor) to sell 1 kg of grain to FCI.

Not a single farmer of Punjab can bypass these agents. Examples of commission agents include Sukhbir Singh Badal and Majethia. They  are two of many  big crorepati farmers who don't pay a single paisa in tax, get free electricity all the year round, so much so that urban areas of Punjab and Industry suffer from power cuts up-to 6 hours of day.

Most industry has left Punjab as land is too expensive to set up industry. Unemployment is pushing the urban youth of these states to drugs, and Khalistan movement. This is one of the main reasons Punjabis are joining the armed forces.

Why rest of  India shall bother for FARMERS of PUNJAB—who are otherwise well protected by State, and Central Government ???
