SELECTING THE RIGHT GEYSER

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

Winter is approaching. Some of you may buy new geyser; or some of you may like to change old one.

Choosing the right geyser for your home involves considering several important factors. We will discuss those below.

The selection of Geyser will vary, whether the water is SOFT, or HARD. First, we discuss Geyser suitable for soft water, as majority of supply water is with TDS below 200.

You need to determine the size of the water geyser that will best suit your needs. Consider the number of people to be using the geyser, frequency of use, and the size of your bathroom.

Safety is another crucial factor to consider. Ensure that the water heater you choose comes with essential safety features like a capillary thermostat, automatic thermal cut-off, and a pressure release valve. These features are essential to protect against electric shocks, malfunction, and occasional burst due to over pressure, by formation of STEAM. I have seen three fatal accidents due to burst of Geyser , leading to death of 3 persons with 80% burn, over 30 years in three different cases..

The time it takes for a geyser to heat water depends on the tank volume. Larger tanks take longer to heat, while smaller tanks provide instant hot water.

If your home receives hard water, it's important to select a water heater that can handle it. Hard water can cause corrosion and damage the heating element in geysers. Look for a water heater with features like Crompton's triple shield technology, which protects the tank and prevents residue from settling.

Geysers designed to endure higher pressure, with inner tank coating and anti-rust outer body, ensure durability and sustainability.

Energy efficiency is another key consideration. Look for geysers with a high energy efficiency rating to reduce electricity consumption and save on bills. Heaters, for example, have a 5-star energy efficiency rating, ensuring optimal savings.

Don't forget to consider the warranty period of the product. A longer warranty can save you repair costs if the water heater breaks down unexpectedly. A good manufacturer offers normally 2-year warranty period for their water heaters.

Pre-set Timings for Water Heating

We are sure you have been in the situation where you have woken up one morning and you realise you have forgotten to switch on the water geyser, or you have come back from work and you need to wait for a while before the water is heated.

Smart Energy Management and Less Power Consumption

You would think that your electricity bills would spike up because of a smart geyser, however, with a ‘standby cutoff’ feature, your water heater will consume less energy without compromising on the quality that it is delivering. This is because it consumes less than 1 watt of energy even if it is left on for seven to eight hours a day.

Temperature Control

The best feature of a smart water heater is its ability to control the temperature according to your needs. Some smart geysers are equipped with a knob on the body of the geyser where you can set the temperature accordingly with the knob.

Safety

Smart geysers also provide a higher level of safety because of its ability to regulate the temperature. You can control the temperature and prevent it from becoming burning hot which is unsafe for your skin. Some geysers are also equipped with an alert system that notifies you every time there is a leak or a small malfunction.

Control on App.

Smart water heaters are also equipped with sophisticated remote control. You can operate your smart water heater even without getting out of your bed.

For Hard Water:-

When selecting a water heater for hard water, there are several factors to consider. First, it's important to understand what hard water is and how it can affect your water heater. Hard water contains high mineral content, such as calcium and magnesium, which can lead to scaling, corrosion, and reduced heating efficiency in your geyser.

To mitigate these issues, there are a few factors to keep in mind when choosing a water heater for hard water.

  1. Energy Efficiency: Look for a water heater with a higher Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) star rating. A 4-star or 5-star rated product will optimize energy usage and help reduce electricity bills.
  2. Tank Quality: Select a water heater with a glass-lined tank instead of a metal-lined tank. A glass-lined tank prevents corrosion, thereby increasing the lifespan of the geyser. Choose a reputed brand that offers a minimum warranty on the product and good after-sales service.
  3. Family Size: Consider the size of the geyser based on your family's needs. For a family of 2-3 people, a 10-15 litre tank storage should be sufficient. If you have more than 4 people, select for a tank size of 25 litres and above.
  4. Weather Conditions: Take into account the weather conditions in your area. For moderate temperatures (around 15-20 degrees Celsius), a tank storage capacity of 6-10 litres is usually adequate. However, if you live in an extremely cold place, a larger capacity of 50 litres or more may be recommended.
  5. It's also important to maintain the health of your geyser to prolong its lifespan. While hard water can be damaging, there are preventive measures you can take. Regular cleaning and descaling of the geyser can help remove mineral deposits. Additionally, considering a water heater with features like triple shield technology can protect against corrosion and sedimentation.

Finally, consider your budget and the features you require when looking for a water heater. Prices can vary based on the features and benefits provided. A good company offers a range of geysers within different price ranges to accommodate various budgets.

In conclusion, choosing the right geyser for your home involves considering factors like size, safety, heating time, water quality, energy efficiency, warranty, and budget. By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and select the optimized geyser for your needs.

Comments

  1. Nowadays, online water softners are available which may be installed on the water inlet pipework to mitigate the issues arising out of hard water in geysers.

  2. Another good feature which is offered in some models is a dial type temperature indicator fixed on front side of the geyser. This is helpful in knowing the temperature to which water has been heated at any time, based on which one can take a call for usage.
