Captain Vijayant Thapar

A LIFE TO LIVE

A MOST HONOURABLE DEATH

AND LIVING BEYOND DEATH

Captain Vijayant Thapar

KARGIL WAR:3 May 1999 – 26 July 1999

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

An young man in early twenties, just barely been joined the Indian Army for a year ago. .... His battalion 2 Rajputana Rifles was deployed in Kupwara, Kashmir to counter Pakistani Sponsored Terrorism in the valley.

During his posting in Kupwara, this brave soldier used to take part in encounters with terrorists every now and then... and used to send them off to 72 fairies. There was a school near his army camp where a four-year-old mute girl studied... whose name was Rukhsana. This army officer, who had a very ruthless heart for terrorists, noticed that the innocent girl was very quiet... The young officer's heart melted at the innocence and helplessness of that girl. When he inquired about the girl from the school authorities, he came to know that she belonged to a very poor family... and her father was killed by terrorists in front of his eyes. Due to this shock, she had lost her voice.

I don't know what kind of effect these emotions had that the young soldier's heart started swell with love for that girl. Whenever he was free from duty, he would go to that girl. He would bring chocolates and toys for her. He would try to talk to her. Not only this, he also started paying her school fees from his own pocket. Now was this God's grace or something else... the girl's voice slowly returned.

Three months later, the Kargil war started and his battalion was ordered to march towards Drass sector. There, his battalion was given the task of conquering the peak of Tololing… which the battalion conquered by displaying indomitable bravery… although 21 brave sons of Mother India were martyred in this mission. After this, 2 Rajputana Rifles were given the responsibility of liberating the peak named Black Rocks situated between Tololing and Tiger Hills from the nefarious occupation of Pakistan. After a fierce battle, the battalion of this brave soldier conquered this peak too after facing extremely unfavourable conditions… but this brave and courageous soldier of Mother India was martyred in the last phase of this mission.

The name of that brave young soldier is... martyr Captain Vijayant Thapar. He was later awarded the Vir Chakra. His valour, courage and patriotism is an example for us, but Captain Vijayant, who had the courage of a lion, also has a human side to his personality which the traitors here do not know.

Before going on the Black Rocks mission, Captain Vijayant had an idea that it would be very difficult to return alive from there. He then wrote a letter to his parents and handed it over to his companion with the instruction that if he gets martyred during the mission, then that letter should be given to his family. And as feared, that happened. Captain Vijayant got martyred. As per his wish, that last letter was handed over to his family.

There were other things in that last letter too but the thing which is worth mentioning in this writing is that as his last wish, Captain Vijayant had instructed the family to bear the expenses of the education of that girl Rukhsana till she stands on her own feet. How emotional... how soft must have been the heart of that soldier who was worried for that girl even before going on the mission of death who was nothing to him... and neither belonged to his religion.

Her father... Colonel VN Thapar... who himself is a retired military officer... fulfilled the last wish of his martyr son. For the last 18 years, the Thapar family has been taking full responsibility of that girl... who is now a 23-year-old woman. The girl is currently a 3rd year student and she considers martyr Captain Vijayant Thapar as her father.

Hundreds of salutes to the brave soldier
