PANTSIR AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM

PANTSIR  AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

Important of Air supremacy in WAR started being felt from first world war itself. It got intensified in Second World War. Later, USA, and USSR competed with each other to develop Missiles, ICBM , Supersonics… etc to attack enemy through  aerial route.

GULF WAR, fought by USA against IRAQ, first showcased the efficacy of the system.

New addition in the attack systems are ‘Military Drones’.

With this, the importance of Air Défense System started got developing—and is a must requirement.

The THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Défense, is considered to be among the best in the world. It is believed to cost somewhere between $1.96 and $3.25 billion. Lockheed Martin, its makers, says it can defend against short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.

However, India can’t buy that.

Iron drome of Israel was put to test recently, and extensively. It is  found wanting in many ways.

In the above scenario, India took the second best  alternative.

The Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Russian aerospace and Défense company Rosoboronexport for the supply of Pantsir mobile air defence system to India. The MoU between India and Russia was signed in Goa at the fifth India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) Subgroup meeting in Goa.

Under the MoU, the two sides will co-develop variants of the Pantsir system as part of India’s attempts to increase self-reliance in Défense manufacturing. According to media reports, Russia will offer India the latest version of the system.

Pantsir-S1 is the baseline model of the Pantsir family. The system is a gun/missile VSHORAD air defence system, armed with two twin 30 mm 2A38M cannons and two six round surface to air missile launchers firing the 57E6 missile.

However—the system is already upgraded, and improved upon by Russia, and India will only purchase/ produce the ‘UPGRADED’ version..

The system is known for its high mobility, mounted on a wheeled chassis, making it suitable for both static and mobile defence operations. The Pantsir's radar suite includes both search and fire-control radars, allowing it to track and engage multiple targets simultaneously.

The Pantsir system integrates both missiles and guns to provide multi-layered protection against a wide range of aerial threats. The system is designed to defend key assets such as military bases, airports, and industrial sites, etc.

Pantsir-S1 air Défense missile and gun system (ADMGS) is designed for air defence of small-sized military, administrative and industrial facilities and areas against fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft, cruise and short-range missiles, and precision munitions as well as for strengthening air Défense units against massive air attacks.

The system  is a cluster of mobile, multi-channel, short to medium-range surface-to-air missile, and Guns. The Pantsir, which combines a short reaction time with the capability of a combat vehicle, can engage aircraft with its missiles at altitudes of up to 15 km and with its 30mm guns at altitudes of up to 3,000 metres.

It’s effectiveness got tested in present war between Russia, and Ukraine. The result is ‘GOOD’.

India’s Jamnagar, and western part of Gujarat, and BARC are easy TARGETS, and need the protection by this system badly.

According to open sources, the unit cost of the Pantsir ranges from $13.15 million to $14.67 million on the export market.

The United States, Russia, India, France, Israel, Italy, United Kingdom, China and Iran have all developed Missile Défense Systems. All are constantly  improving upon it.
