INDIA: (GOI, SWARAJYA, VISHWAMITRA, HINDU POST).

1.      Prime Minister Narendra Modi says, India is emerging as a leading force in the Global Space and Aviation sectors; Addresses plenary Session of World Air Transport Summit in New Delhi.

2.      The government on Monday notified guidelines for its forward-looking scheme to enable fresh investments from global manufacturers in the electric cars segment and promote Bharat as a global manufacturing hub for e-vehicles.

3.      India and the US are accelerating negotiations to conclude an interim trade agreement by late June, aiming to avoid new 26 per cent US tariffs on Indian exports and seeking a full rollback of April 2 tariff hikes. (FE).

4.      IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on Monday strongly backed the Indian government’s cautious approach of not expanding bilateral air services agreements with countries that host major global hub airports, particularly in the Gulf. Responding to growing pressure from carriers like Emirates, Elbers maintained that bilateral pacts must work in the interest of both nations — not just the more vocal side.

5.      *Indian Railways has introduced new rules for booking train tickets, effective May 1, 2025, including the reduction of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) from 120 days to 60 days. Additionally, passengers holding waiting list tickets are no longer permitted to travel in sleeper or AC coaches and must use general coaches. Finally, OTP verification is now required for all online ticket purchases. 

6.      Sikkim to resume Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathu La after 5-year hiatus:  the first batch of pilgrims arriving in Gangtok on 15th June 2025. The sacred pilgrimage to the abode of Lord Shiva will begin from Gangtok and proceed to Kailash and Mansarovar via the Nathu La Pass. Ten batches of 48 pilgrims each will undertake the 20-21-day journey, accompanied by liaison officers, cooks, and support staff. 

7.      Kashmir has taken a big step in fruit transport. For the first time, fresh cherries from the valley will be sent by train from Katra (Jammu) to Mumbai. This new service will help small farmers who could not afford to send their fruits by air earlier.

9.      A 160-member Border Security Force (BSF) contingent, comprising 25 women personnel, will head to Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday for deployment with the UN peacekeeping mission. 

10.  India and Algeria are taking significant steps to deepen their bilateral cooperation, specifically targeting the shared threat posed by Pakistan-based Salafi terrorist groups.

11.  Pakistan’s Punjab province is confronting a severe water crisis as the Kharif (Summer Crop) sowing season gets underway, with critical shortages threatening both agriculture and hydropower generation across the region. The core of the crisis lies in the dwindling water levels of the Indus River system, which includes the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers.  In about a month’s time, monsoon will ease this problem, and Pakistan shall plan for Late Kharif Sowing, and harvesting.

WORLD:

A.    Polish nationalist Karol Nawrocki narrowly won the country’s presidential runoff election yesterday. He earned 50.89 percent of votes to liberal and pro-European Union (EU) candidate Rafał Trzaskowski’s 49.11 percent.

B.     A coordinated Ukrainian drone attack hit four airfields deep inside Russia over the weekend. Ukraine’s security service said the attacks hit 34 percent of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers and caused $7 billion in damage, while open-source intelligence analysts said at least fourteen Russian aircraft were damaged. The attack came ahead of the latest round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Istanbul today. 

C.    The United States will increase its tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from 25 to 50 percent, Trump said Friday. The change is set to take effect Wednesday. Trump also said a partnership between Japan’s Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel would move forward and include $14 billion of new investments, though he later said the deal still needed to be finalized and approved. 

D.    Iran received a document from the United States proposing elements of a nuclear deal on Saturday. The proposal called for Iran to stop all uranium enrichment and join a consortium to produce nuclear power that includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab countries, unnamed officials told the New York Times. A UN nuclear watchdog report circulated hours before the proposal’s delivery reportedly said Iran had grown its stockpile of highly-enriched uranium by around half in roughly three months, bringing it a step away from having fuel for multiple nuclear weapons.

E.     Moscow accepted a Taliban-nominated ambassador from Afghanistan, the Afghan foreign ministry said Sunday. While no country formally recognizes the Taliban government, Russia now joins several countries that have accepted diplomats from the Taliban administration at the ambassador level, starting with China in 2023. Russia removed the Taliban from its terrorist list in April, formally ending a two-decade designation.

G.    Mexico’s judicial election. Only 13 percent of eligible voters participated in Mexico’s first-ever judicial election yesterday, authorities said. That’s down from 60 percent who participated in the most recent presidential election last year.  WE ALSO SHALL REPLACE ‘COLLEGIUM’ BY A MORE TRANPARENT ELECTION SYSTEM.

H.    Austria and Slovenia are the only two among a group of thirty European countries analysed by the Guardian with plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their militaries to net-zero. The analysis covered the European Union as well as Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom (UK). Only a third of the countries have calculated the total carbon footprint of their militaries. The United States set a 2050 target for net-zero emissions from military procurement in 2022.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY:

ISRO Conducts Successful Third Hot Test of Semi-Cryogenic Engine Power Head Test Article. On May 28, 2025, the Power Head Test Article (PHTA) underwent a third hot test at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri, that was aimed at validating the engine’s ignition and start-up sequence and to derive optimum sequence for the integrated engine.

According to multiple defence sources during Operation Sindoor in early 2025, Turkey’s highly publicised Bayraktar-TB2 drones—operated by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF)—suffered a catastrophic failure against Indian defences. 

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:

I.            Sixteen Maoists, including two hardcore insurgents, have surrendered in Sukma, Chhattisgarh, marking a significant setback for the Maoist movement in the region.

II.            Among them, a woman and a man carried individual bounties of Rs 8 lakh, while others had varying rewards, bringing the total to Rs 25 lakh. The surrender took place on Monday before senior police and CRPF officers in Sukma district.

III.            In Mumbai, the Sahar Police have arrested four Nepali youths for allegedly attempting to travel to Gulf countries using fake documents. They had entered India from Bihar. Each of the accused had paid Rs. 2.50 lakh in Nepali currency to an agent for travel arrangements and forged documents.

IV.            National Commission for Women (NCW) issued a notice to Bihar government over the death of a minor rape victim in Muzaffarpur. Taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, the Commission has asked the State Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to ensure a thorough and impartial probe into the matter.

In Sikkim, three army personnel lost their lives while several others are missing after massive landslide struck the Indian Army’s camp at Chatten in Mangan district in the last evening.1678 tourists evacuated. Environmental: -

The Jharkhand government is set to establish its first tiger safari in the Barwadih Western Forest Range. This area is part of the Palamau Tiger Reserve. The initiative aims to enhance tourism and provide a conservation education centre.

ENVIRONMENT:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather alerts across the Karnataka state. Red alerts have been declared in six districts including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru, warning of intense rainfall over the next three days. 

A massive eruption occurred at Mt. Etna on the Italian island of Sicily, producing a plume of high temperature gases, ash and rock “several kilometres high,” authorities said on Monday.

The eruption, which began overnight, produced explosions heard as far away as Taormina and Catania, which are about 50 kilometres and 40 kilometres away, respectively, according to several witnesses who posted footage on social media.
