In a classic piece of Trump theatre this week, two Democratic senators visiting the Oval Office for crunch talks to avert a government shutdown were offered a parting gift from the president: red hats emblazoned with “Trump 2028”. They declined.

The United States guarantees it will defend Qatar if it is attacked, including through the use of military force, Trump pledged in an executive order. COMMENT: Qatar is protecting and feeding arms to Hamas. Hamas has and is  launching attacks on Israel. Israel is Defending and fighting Hamas. USA is supplying arms to Israel, and supporting Israel. The circularity is obvious!! However—this is not yet approved by senate.

Following the Doha strike by Israel, Saudi Arabia signed a mutual Défense treaty with nuclear-armed Pakistan.

The cabinet of Papua New Guinea (PNG) approved a mutual Défense pact with Australia, paving the way for its signing. The treaty alliance,  allows PNG soldiers to serve in Australia’s military. China, a major economic partner to PNG, indirectly criticized the pact, saying a bilateral treaty should not “prevent a sovereign country from cooperating with a third party.” 

Israeli forces intercepted more than a dozen boats sailing to provide humanitarian aid (????) to Gaza and protest Israel’s war. 

The U.S. government is taking a 5 percent stake in mining company Lithium Americas, which is developing a mine in Nevada. It follows the government’s move to take a 10 percent stake in Intel, as well as a 15 percent cut of Nvidia and AMD’s chip sales to China. 

The protests in France resumed on Thursday as thousands of people took to the streets against the government's sharp spending cuts in over 200 towns and cities, and leading to the closure of Eiffel Tower in Paris.

ENERGY:-

Berkshire Hathaway has agreed to buy Occidental Petroleum’s OxyChem unit for $9.7 billion in cash, marking Berkshire’s largest deal since 2022. Occidental plans to use $6.5 billion of proceeds to reduce debt, reinforcing its strategy to prioritize oil and gas development in the Permian basin.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:

Two people were killed in an attack at a Manchester synagogue and the suspect is believed to be dead, local police said today. The attack is being investigated as terrorism and occurred on Yom Kippur, an important holiday.

German authorities yesterday said they detained three people who they suspect of being Hamas members and of planning to attack Jewish or Israeli institutions.

 

MISHAPS: -

At least 11 people, including children, died after a tractor-trolley carrying devotees for Durga idol immersion overturned into a pond in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa. The tractor was driven into deep water despite warnings from the local kotwal (village watchman). It lost balance and overturned, throwing the passengers into the pond.

In Vietnam, 34 people died, 20 were missing, and 140 were injured due to the impact of typhoon Bualoi and subsequent floods and landslides.

 

The death toll from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu province in the central Philippines has risen to 72.

 

In Nepal, at least four people, including three children, died after being buried in a mudslide in Madhesh province.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL: -

Pope Leo on Wednesday called for more global pressure on politicians to protect the climate and criticized people who “deride the increasingly evident signs of climate change.” His remarks came  a week after Trump called warnings about climate change a “con job” while speaking at the United Nations.
