SAIN BARI—1970

SAIN BARI was located in Bardhhaman District, West Bengal, India. The whole family was supporter of CONGRESS before independence, and it continued  The Sain Bari Murder occurred on March 17, 1970, in the house of the Sain family , where three people were killed, one blinded; and their blood was forced to be eaten with rice by their mother. Later, it was mentioned as one of the most notorious  Political murder incidents in India.

A prominent family in Bardaman, the Sain family, were staunch supporters of the Indian National Congress. In the 1970s, in spite of  repeated threats and measured violence applied to convert them to the Communist Party, they refused.  That was only their CRIME, in the eye of CPI(M). Ironically, that day never had to be a sad ending because the naming ceremony of a new born baby of one of the daughters-in-law was to occur on the 17th of March of that year. But fate had other plans. The day before the assassination, Khokhan Sain had conducted a rally to celebrate the fall of the United Front government, in which CPI(M) was a prominent partner. According to Rani Sain, the widow of the slain Naba Kumar Sain,  this triggered the terrorist incident that took place that day. She further narrated, about a group of  four hundred CPM HARMADS arrived at the Sain Bari and surrounded the house, started throwing stones and shooting arrows. Realizing that the family got terrified, they broke into the house and stole everything they could find. Naba Kumar's eyes were gouged out. The Communists clearly believed that gouging his eyes and pouring acid on them was right punishment for being a bourgeoisie. Pranab Kumar and Malay Kumar were then hacked to death in front of their mother. Communist aggressors also brutally attacked Mriganayana Devi, who pleaded not to harm her children. The attackers also killed Jitin Ray, a teacher who came to their house to provide tuition. The baby was thrown into a ‘HOMAGNI’  (SACRED FIRE) prepared as part of the naming ceremony. But other family members rescued the child. They gave the name 'Amrita Kumar' to the child who is still living with burn marks.

Rekha Rani—a member of the family, who saw the HORROR, and survived—narrated the incident in details to a reporter of INDIAN EXPRESS, and it is listed in the reference.

It is further reported, in West Bengal, 15,000 people were killed in continuity to  that incident, most were CONGRESS SUPPORTERS. But it has not formed any part of our political history books. Enough records are still available in various  old editions of Bengali News Papers—particularly in editions of ABP of that period—which was then anti—CPI(M).

How many people are aware of the fact that the husband of Rekha Rani had his eyes gouged out by the monsters who descended upon the family? Acid was poured into his eyes.

How many people are aware that the son of Rekha Rani’s sister-in-law was snatched away from the lap of his mother and thrown into a raging fire before the Child was saved by other relatives?

The events of the 17th of March, 1970 triggered a series of murders later also. Rekha Rani’s husband was murdered a year later. Gunamoni Roy, an NSUI activist who was a witness to the massacre, was murdered when he had gone to depose before the Tarapada Mukherjee Commission constituted  by M. S.S.Roy—Congress C.M.to probe the incident. It failed to bring justice.

CPI (M) came back in power, and all efforts were silenced.

The current Trinamul government set up the Justice Arunava Basu commission in May—2011;  I don’t know the status.

It is perhaps a sign of our times that while the monsters prospered, the survivors were relegated to a life of misery and desperation. Decades have passed,  Harekrishna Kongar, Nirupam Sen…etc., the alleged perpetrators OF THE CRIME are dead, the Communists no longer rule the BENGAL, TMC, and MB promised Justice to the victims-- and yet, the family continues to suffer in ignominy.

THE SAIN BARI IS NOW A HAUNTED PLACE, THAT I VISITED SOME TIME AGO. AND IT IS A IRONY THAT INC, AND CPI9M0 ARE NOW ELECTION PARNERS IN WEST BENGAL!!
