AAP blames HARYANA for water problems—but a little
calculation below will show that Delhi actually can manage the summer month
water shortage easily.
Calculation:-Refer CPWD MANUAL
- Delhi
receives on an average 774.4 mm or better rainfall annually which is not an
inadequate amount of rainfall. In
fact, it recently broke the records of the rainfall in 2021. So,
the annual natural recharge of water was never an issue.
- Delhi’s
Surface are : 148.2
Crore Sq. M.
- Delhi is surrounded
by the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Delhi has an area
of 1,483 sq. kms. Its maximum length is 51.90 kms and maximum width is 48.48 kms.
- Total
Rain Water=148.2*0.7744=114+ Crore tonne. Or M3.
- Delhi
Population:- 33,807,000..—2024
data.
- Rain
Water / Population=33,720 Liter per head per year.
- Domestic
water Demand: This includes water which is required for use in private
residences, apartment houses, etc., for drinking cooking, bathing, washing
of clothes, and other household chores. As per IS1172-1971, the domestic
water consumption under normal conditions in an Indian city is 135
Liters per head per day.
- Considering
per head water as 135 Liter/day, No
of Days= 249 days (GROSS)
- Let
us consider total losses 50% due to surface, and sub surface run off (10%,
& 20%,) evaporation(5%), and other losses (15%), Total 50 %, still Rain Water can tide over (249*0.5)
120+ days of summer month.
- If
Delhi does RW HARVESTING, and recharge AQUIFER diligently, problem will be solved.
- In
our Sr. CITIZEN Colony at Nirmay, we can do about 80% RW HARVESTING.
- The main reason for water
scarcity in Delhi is mostly due to lacking a long-term vision and
neglecting to build infrastructure and mechanisms to conserve water. This
is also the story of other cities of India (irrespective of government).
- Water conservation was never
under the core agenda of Delhi government. It prioritized distribution of free
water and electricity instead.
- For scarcity of Water or Flood,
blame Haryana. For Oxygen—Blame Centre. Winter Smog—Blame Punjab, and
Haryana; Law & Order: Blame LG.
- The Delhi government appears to
indulge more in blame game and conspiracy theories instead of actually
taking bold steps.
- Even after a decent Rain
Fall—Delhi’s Water Scarcity is mainly MAN MADE, & PATHETIC.
- And all these lead to “TANKER
MAFIA”.
