ELIMINATION OF HADDAD

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has sparked widespread debate. Iran has vowed to retaliate against this incident. Recent reports indicates that the Israeli spy agency Mossad may have used Iranian security personnel to carry out Haniyeh's assassination. The fear of war in West Asia has intensified following Haniyeh's death. However, this is not the first instance of Mossad's involvement in covert assassinations in this manner.

One notable case is that of Wadie Haddad, a leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinian, who was targeted by Mossad in 1978. Haddad was known for his involvement in the 1976 Air France hijacking. Operation Entebbe, also known as Operation Jonathan, was an Israeli hostage rescue mission. It took place in July 1976 in Entebbe, Uganda. An Air France airplane was hijacked on 27 June 1976 by German and Palestinian terrorists. They wanted the release  prisoners held in Israel and four other countries.

In a daring rescue operation by ISRAEL, all seven  militants were killed, and 11 MiG fighters supplied to Uganda by the Soviet Union were destroyed; the Israelis lost one soldier and three hostages during the operation. On the return trip, the Israeli planes met an awaiting hospital plane and refuelled at Nairobi, Kenya. The success of the Entebbe raid substantially boosted Israeli morale.

HADDAD, known as the MASTER MIND for Entebbe Hijacking, was considered a major threat. Mossad executed a secretive operation to eliminate him.

Agent "Sadness" was assigned to this mission and had access to Haddad's home and office. On January 10, 1978, Sadness replaced Haddad's regular toothpaste with one laced with a poison developed by the Israel Institute for Biological Research. As Haddad used the poisoned toothpaste, the toxin gradually spread through his body.

By mid-January, Haddad's health began deteriorating while he was in Baghdad. He suffered from abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, and, ultimately, hepatitis and fever. Despite extensive treatment by Iraqi doctors, Haddad's condition worsened. The doctors began to suspect poisoning.

Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, asked an aide to get help from the Stasi, East Germany's Secret Service. This was a time when the Soviets helped the Palestinian fighters and provided them with passports, shelter, weapons and intelligence.

After  Arafat's aide reached out to the East German Secret Service, or the Stasi, Haddad was moved from Baghdad to East Berlin. He was admitted to a hospital where they treated intelligence and secret-service community members. It was March 19, 1978. By now, Haddad had spent two very painful months in the Baghdad hospital, without anyone being able to figure out what was wrong with him.

When East Berlin intervened, Arafat hoped the results would be a little clearer. Haddad was admitted to the Regierungskrankenhaus. While being airlifted from Baghdad, Haddad's helpers packed a bag of toiletries along. It had a tube of toothpaste too.

BY THE TIME HADDAD REACHED BERLIN, HE WAS A 'DEAD MAN WALKING'.

Forty-one-year-old Ahmed Doukli, the name Haddad was admitted to the East Berlin hospital, was haemorrhaging in many places. The pericardium around his heart was leaking blood. The haemorrhaging was at the root of his tongue, his pleural membranes, his tonsils, and even his urine. His platelet count dropped dangerously.

He was put through all possible tests by the doctors at the hospital, but there was nothing to be found. Their conjecture was: either rat-poison or thallium poisoning, given that it was not a sudden death. There was no physical evidence in Haddad to help the doctors come to a conclusion, much like what happened with the doctors in Baghdad.

For ten days, Haddad lived in the worst of agony. His screams could be heard all through the hospital in East Berlin, and doctors had to keep him sedated all day and night.

Then, on March 29, Haddad breathed his last.
