TEESTA SETALVAD-- ACTIVIST FOR MINORITY

TEESTA SETALVAD

THE ACTIVIST FOR MINORITY

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

The Supreme Court  superseded a July 1 -2023 order of the Gujarat High Court directing activist Teesta Setalvad to surrender immediately in a forgery case linked to the 2002 riots. The apex court,  said Ms. Setalvad would continue on bail in accordance with a September 2, 2022, vide order of the Supreme Court.

The rumour in social media  is that, after receiving PHONE CALL, CJI got  the Supreme Court opened at night on July 1, 2023 to grant bail to activist Teesta Setalvad.
Originally, Ms. Setalvad was arrested from Mumbai on June 25 , 2022, by a team of Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad officers. Her arrest was based on an FIR registered in Gujarat the previous day.

There are many activists I know, arrested and were put into Jail over a period of time, in the past—but the manner in which this activist got BAIL—is exemplary, to say the least!

Teesta Setalvad is an Indian civil rights activist and journalist. She is the secretary of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), an organisation formed to advocate for the Muslim Victims of 2002 Gujarat violence, which was ‘EFFECT’ of a ‘CAUSE’.

Setalvad was born 9 February 1962 into a Gujarati family, her father’s name is  Atul Setalvad, a Mumbai-based lawyer, and her mother’s name is Sita Setalvad. Her paternal grandfather was M. C. Setalvad, India’s first Attorney General. Setalvad married Javed Anand, a Muslim journalist who became a  minority rights activist in 1987.

FAMILY’S PRE-INDEPENDENCE BACKGROUND:-

The infamous Hunter Commission was a commission of inquiry that gave a clean chit to General Reginald Dyer, who ordered the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Harilal Chimanlal Setalvad, who was a member of this commission was the great-grandfather of Teesta Setalvad, who is now  on BAIL. It was this Harilal Chimanlal Setalvad's son, i.e. Teesta's grandfather, Motilal Chimanlal Setalvad, who later acquitted General Dyer in the same Jallianwala Bagh case. After independence, Nehru appointed the same Motilal Chimanlal Setalvad, who had acquitted General Dyer, as the Attorney General.

One of the many indelible records of Nehru's British allegiance!

EDUCATION, JOURNALISM, MARRIAGE:-

She studied in law college for two years, dropped out and then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Bombay University in 1983 and started working as a journalist. She started her journey as a journalist from very famous newspaper and later worked for Business magazine. Her first brush with communal violence came when she covered the 1984 riots in Bhiwandi.

ACTIVITIES:

In 1993, in response to the Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai, she and her husband quit their regular jobs and  started  ‘Communalism Combat’, a monthly magazine.
Setalvad and her husband, along with others such as Father Cedric Prakash (a catholic priest), Anil Dharker (a journalist), Alyque Padamsee, Javed Akhtar, Vijay Tendulkar and Rahul Bose (all film & theatre personalities) set up an NGO named “Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP)” on 1 April 2002.

Zakia Jafri, widow of a Muslim Congress minister, in 2004, made a team of 5 people to fight Mr. Modi. They are :-Teesta Setalvad  (litigation) 2. Sreekumar (Police) 3. Sanjeev Bhatt (Police) 4. Mukul Sinha 5. Rana Ayyub (Media).

UPA with Congress came into power in centre, and formed ministry.

The NGO forthwith began to prosecute in various courts against the alleged complicity of the Chief Minister and government of Gujarat state in the riots that had broken out shortly before. Their efforts met with partial success in April 2004, when the Supreme Court of India transferred the “Best Bakery case” to the neighbouring state of Maharashtra.

They were supported by Prashantbhusan, another Lawyer withy questionable reputation!

However, Mr. Modi went on winning elections after elections in Gujarat, and India—and these people ultimately could do nothing. However—the rumour is that her NGO got Millions of Dollars from abroad, before present GOI tightened. May be-ARAB DOLLARS!!

WHERE SHE STAYS?

Amitabh Bachchan's bungalow stands on Juhu-Tara Road, Juhu, Mumbai. Adjacent to that is ‘NIRANT’—a much bigger Bungalow. The present owner of the Nirant bungalow in Juhu, Mumbai is civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand, as information available in Public Domain.

The bungalow is  supposed to be her ancestral property, and she lives there with her family.

The road side gate has "Nirant" written on one side and "Setalvad" on the other.

The bungalow is also home to the offices of organizations run by the Setalvads.

Refer the image on top—Bungalow is shown on right part.
