DELHI’S FUTURE CHIEF MINISTER

DELHI’S CHIEF MINISTER

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

The information from the elected MLA’s are circulating in various Social Media  is that, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) most  likely will pick Delhi’s Chief Minister from the pool of MLAs-elect who have made it to the Assembly. A senior national BJP leader told The Hindu on 13/02 that the party is planning to announce its Chief Minister after Prime Minister returns on February 17. The party is also not yet inclined towards naming any Deputy Chief Minister for the national capital, the same leader said. (Ref. HINDU)

In most recent cases, BJP's central leadership decided the Chief Minister's name after the results and almost all were surprise choices. So, even in Delhi, the leader will not be elected by the MLAs but selected by the High Command. Particularly—when the Election Faces were Mr. Modi  against Mr. Kejriwal!!

ELECTED CANDIDATES’ CV:

It is a battle among the near equals. Most of the elected MLAs, from the organisational point-of-view,  are first or second time MLAs. Hence, MLAs like Satish Upadhyay, Ashish Sood, Pawan Sharma, and Shikha Roy have very limited legislative and administrative  experience. Even a leader like Parvesh Verma, who remained MP for two consecutive terms, has neither any experience of governance nor has ever worked managing  any important organisational post.

Rekha Gupta, who has won from Shalimar Bagh, is also a three-time councillor and hence  can be viewed as a potential contender with rather equal merit.

Leaders like Vijendra Gupta, who remained the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly twice and was even the Delhi state BJP president, is not considered  as charismatic enough.

In view of  all above—no elected  MLA is actually a deserving candidate.

However, I will not hazard a ‘guess’. Rather discuss a selection Criteria.

Basis of Selection:-

1.0  One of the prerequisites of a chief minister is that the person should command  the respect of  most of the elected MLAs.

2.0  He should be competent enough to Deliver Delhi to BJP in next assembly election.

3.0  The percentage of Electoral difference is not much. It needs to be nourished, and enhanced.

4.0  The BJP loyalists’ demand is not ‘FREEBIES’ , but good governance and overall development.  Drinking Water, Sanitation, Drainage, Environment, Roads, Jamuna…these are the most critical  but neglected ones those need immediate attention. The Person should be focussed to that. Even, some knowledge, and experience will be better. Even being an Engineer from IIT, Mr. Kejriwal failed to understand the technicalities of above.

5.0  Those who changed sides in this election are:-Some Purvanchalis,  A part of Middle Class to whom Freebies are important, and a part of ‘QUOTA’ people.  They have cast the winning votes for BJP. Their aspirations must also  be fulfilled. They are  ‘FLYING’  VOTERS’! CM shall ensure that they remain.

6.0  Whatever Muslims may say—I don’t think they at all voted for BJP. In  isolated case, they voted for different Muslim Candidates, and BJP candidate won. That is ‘EXCEPTION’. This segment shall not be in the priority, but they shall not be allowed to disturb the ‘Law & Order’ situation in the state. All MADRASAS shall be closed.

7.0  A strong message also shall be sent to ‘BIHAR’ and ‘PUNJAB’ , through selection of appropriate  CM candidate, and his action plan will be very important. Jath population also shall not be ignored.

8.0  Selection of ‘Ministers’ is also equally important. Overall representation shall be ensured.

WHAT EMERGE:

Honestly, it will be more of a balancing game keeping the BJP's larger national politics also in mind.  Long Term, and Short Term; Zonal and Pan Indian—all are important.

Sangh Parivar should play a bigger role in deciding the leader and whosoever will be selected must have a close working relationship with Sangh and  its outfits. I have definite information  that Sangh is playing a very important role in these electoral wins of BJP, during  recent times.
