CASE—1:BASANTI
COTTON MILLS
Basanti Cotton Mills was a
cotton industry established in Panihati, West Bengal, on September 25, 1934. It
has since gone through several corporate changes, and the original mill is now
permanently closed.
The company "Basanti Cotton Mills (1998) Private
Limited" was later incorporated and dealt with weaving and manufacturing
of man-made fibre and mixture fabrics, but its status is now listed as
"Strike Off" (non-operational).
History:
The original Basanti Cotton Mill was organized by Sri Subodh
Chandra Mitra and inaugurated by Rabindranath Tagore in 1934.
The mill was named after the wife of Desh Bandhu
Chittaranjan Das.
A later entity, Basanti Cotton Mills (1998) Private Limited,
was incorporated in 1998. This company's name was struck off by the Registrar
of Companies in 2006, though it was briefly restored by court order in 2012.
Its current status remains "Strike Off".
Location
The registered address for the 1998 private limited company
was:
109F, 139F & 197F B T Road, Panihati North Twenty Four
Parganas, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, 743176.
Products
The company manufactured polyester blended shirting, sarees,
cotton, and blended cambric.
The 44 bighas of land belonging to Basanti Cotton Mill
changed hands and fell into the clutches of land grabbers. Nantu, A LOCAL AGENT,
AND PART OF LAND MAFIA, acted as the mediator. Locally, no one protested except Mr. Kaushik Chatterjee.
The CPM held a perfunctory protest meeting two kilometres
away near the SODPUR TRAFFIC INTERSECTION. One of my relatives attended the meeting, and informed me.
THE BJP DID NOT OFFICIALLY ARRANGED ANY MOVEMENT OR PROTEST AT ALL. I DEMAND: THE MILL SHALL BE REVIVIVED. IT HAS HERITAGE TAG.
Why? Only they can say. Perhaps they are busy with even more
urgent matters!
CASE—2:
PRABARTAK JUTE MILLS LTD.
Incorporated in 1935, this is a public limited company in
the business of preparing, spinning, and weaving jute. The company's registered
corporate office is in the Chatterjee International Centre in Kolkata.
Address (Mill site): 63, Adarsha Pally, Belghoria, Kolkata,
West Bengal 700058
Corporate Office Address: Chatterjee International Centre,
17th Floor, 33A, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Space No. A-9 Kolkata, West Bengal
700071
Status: The company's status was listed as
"Active" with a revenue of Rs. 92.2Cr for the financial year ending
March 31, 2024.
Prabartak Jute Mills Ltd. has recently been in the news for
issuing a lockdown notice, making around 1,000 workers jobless overnight in
early January 2026. While official corporate filings might still list the
company status as "Active" from previous reporting periods (its last
AGM was in September 2024 and balance sheet filed for March 2024), recent news
reports confirm the operational closure of the mill site.
I DEMAND: THE MILL SHALL BE OPENED. NECESSARY ACTIONS SHALL BE STARTED TOWARDS THIS END.
Madan Mitra may be a part of the system. What is about trade union leader
Manas Mukherjee? Where is he? And BJP? Where are the MILL leaders who chant
"Jai Shri Ram"?
The Left Front is a bit busy with future of Venezuela! They are holding processions across Kolkata.
But these are the important issues when you ask for the votes to the people of West Bengal.
The small, medium, and big leaders of the BJP were busy with
the announcement of the state committee. That's also right and
proper. But this is also an issue, isn't it? What you think, Shuvendubabu?
Just think, if Mamata
Devi were in the opposition, and Late Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had been in
power, Writers Building would have been
blocked already. There would have been HARTAL.
