CONCERN: TRADE IMBALANCE. ARE YOU AWAKE??
You
probably own something made by Samsung, Hyundai, or LG. Most Indian households
do. These are among the most visible consumer brands in the country.
Here's
what's less visible: $4.7 billion Extracted from India by Hyundai and LG in
twelve months. Sent to Seoul.
Not
through shady channels. Through IPOs where every rupee went to the Korean
parent, special dividends that drained the subsidiary's cash reserves, and
royalty hikes locked in for years.
Samsung's
royalties to its Korean parent rose 50 per cent in a single year, to ₹3,322
crore. That's roughly 40 per cent of its Indian net profit, flowing back to
Seoul annually.
All
of this is legal under the fifteen-year-old trade agreement between the two
countries. That's the problem.
On
the eve of the Korean president's visit this week, Delhi publicly named the
imbalance for the first time. India's trade deficit with Korea has tripled
since CEPA took effect.
Indian exports to Korea have actually shrunk. The piece traces the money
trail through all three chaebols, explains what each one has been doing, and
looks at what New Delhi is now negotiating towards.
And
here's the part that should sting the most. The same Korean companies don't do
this everywhere.
Korea's
cumulative FDI in Vietnam=$92 billion
Korea's
cumulative FDI in India, an economy ten times the size=$6.7 billion
This
is the Imbalance With Korea That New Delhi Is Trying To Address.
THE END.
