BENGAL NEWS:
Major anti-encroachment drive conducted to clear out Howrah
station area in Bengal. Many temporary stalls and structures occupying
footpaths and public spaces near the bus stand and Ganga ghat area were removed
using bulldozers and earthmovers as part of a railway land clearance initiative
for passengers' convenience.
Bengal govt. gives nod for handover of seven national
highway stretches to NHAI, NHIDCL. These stretches were under the national
highway wing of the State PWD, and the handover proposals had been pending for
nearly a year despite repeated requests, the statement said. Maintenance of
these roads now will be better. THE NH WING OF
PWD SHALL BE CONTRACTED TO MAINTAIN THE HIGHWAYS ONLY.
West Bengal Chief Minister on Saturday (May 16, 2026) held a

West Central Railway has constituted a higher administrative
grade level inquiry committee to investigate the fire incident in
Thiruvananthapuram Central-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express yesterday.
Supreme Court, has taken a serious view of the persistent
illegal sand mining within the National Chambal Sanctuary, reprimanding the
Rajasthan state authorities for their failure to curb the activity.
The Court has impleaded the National Highways Authority of
India (NHAI) in the matter, asked the authorities from the Mines Department and
the Transport and Road Safety Department, State of Rajasthan, to file a
compliance affidavit and be present in the court on the next date of hearing.
