R. G.  KAR MURDER CASE: The Court issued a clear directive: “Start from the dinner. Proceed up to the incident itself. Focus specifically on those lapses.” Noting that the public interest is at stake, the Justice further stated that several senior officers would revisit the scene of the incident.

FALTA: It was primarily one horse race, though 5 more ran. BJP’s Debangshu Panda won by a margin of 1 lakh 9,000++ votes (70%+) more than his nearest rival CPI(M)’s Sambhu Nath Kurmi. TMC’s Jahangir got  less than 4% votes, INC slightly less than 5%, and CPI(M) almost 20%. TMC+INC+CPI(M)  accounts well total Muslim Votes cast. Bulldozer Action: Heavy earthmovers and cranes were deployed in Tiljala, Kasba, and Beleghata to raze unauthorized, unsafe, and unapproved multi-storey constructions.

The demolition drive was spurred by a massive blaze on the first floor of a nearby  five-storey building operating as an illegal leather goods warehouse. The incident resulted in two workers suffocating to death and several others sustaining critical burn injuries. The injured persons are being treated. It was not known how the fire broke out.

Arrests & Crackdown: Police have arrested the owners of the illegal factory and the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) has disconnected power to the targeted structures.

IRAN WAR:

President Donald Trump has said on social media that “an agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalisation” between the US, Iran and regional powers, adding that the deal, which includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, will be announced shortly.

Progress has been made on resolving the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says at a news conference in India.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reports that a disagreement over  three clauses persists.

First, security assurances to make sure there’s not going to be another round of confrontation, especially as Iran was in the middle of the negotiations twice over the past year when they faced another round of escalation. I think both the time it happened because Iran started overplaying its hand.

The second point is sanctions relief, and that makes it related to the nuclear dossier of the country.

And last but not the least is the US-imposed blockade on the Iranian ships and vessels and oil tankers in particular, which is putting a serious negative impact on Iran’s oil exports.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says the next round of talks between the US and Iran will happen “very soon”.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian says no decision will be made without the permission of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says some progress has been made in the past 48 hours as he reiterates that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.

In Philippines, around 20 people are feared to still be trapped under the rubble of a nine-storey under construction building that collapsed early yesterday morning in a city near capital, Manila.

 Border Roads Organisation has created a new global record by constructing the world’s highest motorable road across Mig La Pass in eastern Ladakh. The newly developed route stands at an altitude of 19,400 feet (5,913 metres), surpassing the previous record held by Umling La, which is located at 19,024 feet.

China’s Shenzhou-23 astronauts blast off on space station mission. China has launched its Shenzhou-23 mission to the Tiangong Space Station, carrying Lai Ka-ying, the first astronaut from Hong Kong.

China’s Chang’e-7 lunar exploration mission is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2026. The mission will study the Moon’s south pole through environmental and resource surveys, with a focus on permanently shadowed regions and possible water ice deposits.

Severe heatwave conditions have disrupted normal life across large parts of central and north-west India, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages. Several regions are experiencing intense dry winds and extreme daytime heat, forcing people to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours and reducing outdoor activity significantly.

Punjab Police have arrested a man from Pathankot for allegedly spying on Indian Army and paramilitary movements and sharing surveillance footage with handlers based in Pakistan. Investigators said the accused had installed a CCTV camera along the Pathankot-Jammu highway to monitor troop movement.

Senior police officer Daljinder Singh Dhillon said the surveillance footage from the camera was transmitted electronically to operatives based in Pakistan and other foreign locations. During interrogation, Baljit Singh admitted that he had installed the internet-based CCTV camera near Sujanpur in January this year. Police said he was allegedly acting on instructions from an unidentified person based in Dubai and received Rs 40,000/- for the operation. The Sujanpur police registered a case against four individuals in connection with the alleged espionage network.-- NDTV reported.
