TRAGIC CASE OF SADANANDAN MASTER
TRAGIC CASE OF SADANANDAN MASTER
SARASIJ MAJUMDER
The C. Sadanandan Master case is one of the most
high-profile and documented instances of violent political revenge in Kerala's chequered political history
started in early fifties. It details a decade-long cycle of political friction,
major legal battles, and a recent involvement in national politics.
The Political Target: Sadanandan Master, then was a
30-year-old schoolteacher and a prominent district leader & (Sahayak Karyavah) Joint Secretary for the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
The Ambush: On January 25, 1994, Sadanandan was returning
home at Perinchery, Kannur, after arranging his sister's marriage. He was
ambushed at Uruvachal near Mattannur. An
armed gang of 12 political hoodlums, from Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] dragged
him out of a bus, pinned him down on road, and hacked off both his legs below
the knees while chanting leftist political slogans.
They intentionally mutilated the severed limbs on the
asphalt road to prevent surgical reattachment.
Terror Tactics: To keep onlookers away and prevent rescue, the attackers
detonated country-made bombs at the scene one after the other, while escaping.
The Retaliation: The brutality of the attack escalated the
region's political tension. Just four hours later, K.V. Sudheesh, a prominent
leader of the Left-wing Students’ Federation of India (SFI), was hacked to
death in Koothuparamba.
CPI(M) learned the lesson, and stopped violence.
Motive: The assault on Sadanandan was an act of political
vengeance stemming from intense ideological rivalry after Sadanandan migrated
from Leftist student politics (SFI) to embrace the RSS.
Legal procedure & Conviction: The case was one of the
first in Kerala to book the criminals under the now-defunct Terrorist and
Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), though TADA provisions were
later dropped. The judicial process spanned over three decades due to
continuous appeals, and influence of CPI(M) government to delay the case, who
was in control from May 1996 – May 2001: LDF (Chief Minister: E.K. Nayanar).
The case got some impetus under UDF, from 2001—2006.
Trial Court (2007): The Principal Assistant Sessions Judge
in Thalassery found eight of the accused guilty of criminal conspiracy,
wrongful restraint, and attempt to murder (under IPC Sections 143, 147, 148,
307, 326, and 342). They were sentenced to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Appeals at HC followed.
Kerala High Court Verdict (January 2025): The Kerala High
Court officially dismissed the convicts' revision petitions and upheld their
sentences. The
High Court sharply criticized the initial 7-year sentence as "very
light" given the horrific gravity of amputating a man's both the legs.
However, due to the 31-year delay, the court chose not to extend the prison
time (??) but raised the personal compensation
fine that each convict had to pay Sadanandan from ₹20,000/- to ₹50,000/- each.
Supreme Court (August 2025): Supreme Court rejected their
final appeal, the eight convicted CPI(M) workers surrendered before the
Thalassery Court on August 4, 2025.
Surrender (August 2025): Following the apex court's refusal,
the High Court cancelled their bail and mandated a surrender deadline. On
August 4, 2025, all eight convicted CPI(M) workers surrendered before the
Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court and were transferred to Kannur
Central Jail.
Political Controversy: A major political row erupted when
CPI(M) MLA and former minister K.K. Shailaja attended a celebratory farewell
gathering organized for the convicts just before they surrendered to the court.
Political Elevation & Parliament Uproar: Following his
survival, Sadanandan Master adjusted to walking with prosthetic legs, resumed
teaching, and transitioned fully into mainstream politics. In July 2025,
President Droupadi Murmu nominated Sadanandan Master to the Rajya Sabha, where
he represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In February 2026, the case returned to national headlines
during his maiden speech in the Rajya Sabha. To highlight the lived reality of
political extremism, Sadanandan Master placed his prosthetic limbs directly on
the table of the House. This dramatic demonstration triggered severe protests,
shouting matches, and points of order from Left-wing MPs, and NDA oppositions, causing
a brief suspension of order in Parliament.
I attached an URL below which recorded his speech.
WHAT
SURPRISES ME:
1.0 Kerala
is considered one of the most educated states, even then this Criminal Assault on a RSS worker was carried
out.
2.0 CPI(M)
is not party of educated intellectuals—what it propagates. Its Cadders are ‘BARBARS’.
Its leaders encourage this cruelty, wearing white clothes.
3.0 Even
a former minister tried to made the Criminals as political Heroes! The person never thought that the victim may have died in
the assault!
4.0 The
punishment is almost laughable. I suggest to re-open the case on ground that
the punishment should be ‘EXEMPLARY’ and
term extended to discourage the pollical violence very very strongly.
5.0 Based
on my personal and firsthand experience,
I can tell that political violence in Bengal was associated, and started with Marxists in the decades of late sixties
& early seventies. CPI(M) is responsible for many cruelties in West Bengal
also.
6.0 And
you see, how SLOW is Indian Judiciary!!
7.0
JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED, ME LORD!!
