The Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, under Section 52 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, on 27 August 2026. The rules make Indian Standard Time (IST) the sole mandatory time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes across India.

Tamil Nadu has notified three elephant corridors within the Hosur forest division that includes more than 10,300 hectares as an initiative towards safeguarding critical elephant routes connecting Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These corridors are situated in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary and adjoining reserved forests.

 Camac Street Office Faceoff: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien faced legal notices from the Shakespeare Sarani police station. The police issued summons following a confrontation on Camac Street where TMC leaders allegedly obstructed authorities attempting to demolish an illegal construction near Banerjee's office.

A criminal case registered against Anandabazar Patrika journalists. The controversy stems from a Front-Page Headline using the phrase "Saffron Hooliganism,"  ( गेरुया ताण्डव ) drawing strong National Condemnation.

Jadavpur University Campus Action: Authorities at Jadavpur University whitewashed multiple "anti-national" slogans from campus walls. The cleanup efforts, which concluded on Sunday, drew criticism primarily from Left-aligned student unions.

Ganga Water Treaty Safeguards: The West Bengal government formally urged the Central Government to protect the state's long-term drinking water, irrigation, and shipping interests during the renewal of the Ganga Water Treaty with Bangladesh. The state highlighted that reduced water flow in the Hooghly River is severely impacting maritime navigability and accelerating riverbank erosion in districts like Maldah, Murshidabad, and Nadia.

"Arjun Vahini" Disaster Force: The state administration confirmed that West Bengal's newly formed dedicated disaster response force, named 'Arjun Vahini', is slated to become fully operational in September 2026 to enhance localized rescue readiness.

India and Uzbekistan today announced to elevate their mutual Strategic Partnership to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership level. The Central Asian country also agreed to establish a framework for long-term supply of uranium to India and discuss the sites of the mining for rare earth minerals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Uzbekistan’s supreme state award, the Order of Oliy Darajali Dustlik, by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent.

India emerged as a major exporter of gasoline to Russia in July and August 2026, when Indian refiners shipped nearly 1 million barrels of petrol to meet Russian fuel shortages.

General Zhao Zongqi was removed from the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on 26 August 2026. He also lost his membership in the CPPCC and his post as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Ethnic and Religious Affairs.

NEPAL FLASH FLOOD: 

The death toll from catastrophic glacier collapses and flash floods in Nepal rose to 788, as per official report. Mass burials commenced in the Chitwan district and over 2,500 people still reported missing.

Bodies have been recovered from all eight affected districts, with Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, and Nawalparasi West reporting the highest fatalities.

Nepal has issued fresh alert for flood in Bhote Koshi River. It has  urged residents living along the river in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts to remain cautious. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) of Nepal has reported an increased flood water flow in the river.

President Trump has reportedly called off the planned military strike on Iran after appeals from several Middle Eastern nations, including Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, an Iranian official stated that Tehran did not request President Trump to cancel or avoid any attack against Iran.

Saudi-Türkiye Relations: Saudi leadership sent a congratulatory cable to Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the occasion of Victory Day.

GCC Diplomacy: GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi held separate diplomatic meetings in Riyadh with the South Korean and Georgian ambassadors to boost cooperation.

Qatar Achievements: The Qatar Philatelic Center won five medals at the Asian Stamp Exhibition in Indonesia, while Qatar also advanced global gaming partnerships at Gamescom 2026.

Narcotics Seized: Saudi authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle over 1.9 million amphetamine pills hidden inside a lentil shipment.

Pakistan-Saudi Agriculture Trade: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia concluded talks agreeing to aggressively boost Pakistan's agricultural and food exports to Saudi Arabia, aiming for $3 billion over the next two years.

POK IS BURNING: Recent Developments:

Leadership: Protests are organized by the JKJAAC (Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee) all over the places of POK.

Security Crackdowns: Pakistani security forces launched aggressive night operations and raids in towns like Rawalakot and Mirpur.

Casualties: Clashes between armed protesters and security personnel have led to dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries over the course of the unrest.

Escalation: Authorities imposed bans and internet blackouts, while the JKJAAC pushed forward new protest calendars featuring wheel jams and mass marches.

External Reactions: India's Stance: India monitors the situation closely, blaming Pakistan for systemic exploitation and human rights abuses in the region.

Global Protests: Overseas diaspora communities have held rallies in countries like Norway to protest the actions of security forces.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:

IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) late on Saturday night in connection with irregularities in the veterinary examination conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC).

MISHAPS: -

BALOCH: A fatal IED blast in Duki that killed three brothers and a political protest staged by Jamaat-i-Islami in Quetta over growing lawlessness. Full story is published at Dawn.

Hospital Fire Aftermath: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif suspended eight officials and initiated criminal proceedings following a tragic maternity ward fire in Islamabad that killed 14 infants. Concurrently, a Pakistani nurse who successfully rescued the sole surviving newborn is set to receive a prestigious civil award.

In a tragic incident, at Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, 12 LPG cylinders exploded, triggering a massive fire at a temporary housing unit for migrant workers at Nava India in the city on Saturday afternoon. The intense fire completely gutted around 70 temporary tin-sheet sheds housing more than 300 construction labourers. It also destroyed the personal belongings, documents, and cash of the migrant workers.

Casualties: Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported. Almost all of them were at working site during accident.

WEATHER:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued severe weather warnings across Gangetic West Bengal due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Authorities advised local fishermen to completely avoid venturing out into the sea due to projected squally winds reaching up to 60 kmph in Bengal, and Orissa.

IIT Madras launched Phi ball on 28 August 2026 on its Chennai campus. Phi ball is a three-team competitive invasion sport with rules designed for lower space and infrastructure requirements than conventional basketball.

Phi ball Format and Rules:

Phi ball uses three competing teams in each match. Each team has seven registered players, including four active on-field players and three substitutes. The game is played over three eight-minute quarters, and each basket carries one to three points. Teams rotate the basket they defend after each quarter.

Gujarat has launched the India’s first state-level Sports Genomics Programme. The programme attempts to incorporate genomics in sports science, physiology and nutrition to provide a more scientific basis for identifying athletes and training them at high performance level. Under the supervision of Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), the programme has already commenced collecting samples of athletes in various sports categories.

MEDICINE, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to launch EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, on 4 September 2026 from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The 2,367 kg Earth Observation Satellite will be carried by the GSLV-F17 launch vehicle into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

EOS-05 is an Earth observation satellite designed for imaging and monitoring applications.

Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on 30 August 2026 at 7:26 a.m. EDT aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The $4.3 billion observatory separated from the Falcon Heavy upper stage 31 minutes after liftoff and began a three-month journey to its science orbit near the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2, about 1 million miles from Earth.
