Yesterday was International Literacy Day. The Day is celebrated on the 8th of September every year to remind everyone of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies. Proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 during the 14th session of its General Conference, International Literacy Day provides an opportunity to review progress, deepen understanding of persistent and emerging challenges, and shape future literacy agendas in a rapidly changing world.

India is set to expand apart from the Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail corridor and developing plans for other high-speed rail networks including the proposed Delhi-Patna bullet train corridor that will revolutionize the connectivity in northern India. It will reduce travel time from 12–15 hours via express trains to just 4.5 hours via the high-speed train network connecting New Delhi to Patna.

CONCERN: The actual figure is significantly higher: Government data released by the West Bengal Health Department reveals that nearly 60,000 underage institutional deliveries were recorded across the state in just the first six months of 2026. The statistics, highlighted by Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari, have pushed the administration to launch an aggressive statewide crackdown on child marriage and teenage pregnancies. Local residents walking along the banks of the Damodar River in Sonamukhi, Bankura, discovered a large metallic object embedded in the riverbed sand. GULF WAR:

U.S. Strikes: U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers—four located in the Gulf of Oman and one near Kharg Island.

Retaliation: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a retaliatory missile strike on a base in Jordan hosting U.S. troops.

Houthi Attacks: Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeted Saudi Arabian energy facilities and southern cities, injuring 73 people.

Shipping Warnings: The IRGC warned oil tanker crews near Kuwait and Bahrain to evacuate their vessels.  

Market Impact: International benchmark crude oil prices surged past $100 per barrel amid growing supply disruptions.

NEPAL FLOOD:

The death toll from Nepal’s devastating flash floods reached 1,357 confirmed dead, with ,5326 people still missing.

Tunnels and Search Efforts: Rescue operations entered their 14th day. Teams from the Nepal Disaster Authority heavily focused on scouring mud-filled tunnels at three major hydropower projects where hundreds of workers remain trapped. The recent live rescue of two Nepalis and one Chinese national from deep within the tunnels renewed hope for finding survivors.

National Mourning and Symbolic Funerals: Following the official 13-day Hindu mourning period, families of the missing began performing symbolic funerals and final rites without bodies to find spiritual closure.

Infrastructure and Bridge Crisis: Physical Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal reported preliminary infrastructure damages approaching Rs 200 billion. The floods destroyed 41 motorable bridges between Rasuwa and Chitwan. In response, China dispatched temporary Bailey bridges via the Korala border crossing to help restore cut-off supply lines.

IFRC deployed mobile health clinics and emergency water systems to combat growing sanitary threats in hard-to-reach districts like Nuwakot and Rasuwa.

BALOCH FREEDOM NEWS:

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) released a major statement claiming responsibility for 28 coordinated military operations carried out across Balochistan over the preceding week. The insurgent group claimed these strikes—which included ambushes, IED blasts, and checkpoint takeovers in regions like Mastung, Kalat, and Ghazaband—resulted in the deaths of 52 Pakistani security forces and dozens of injuries.

On the administrative front, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti chaired a high-level review meeting at the Secretariat regarding infrastructure and civic enhancement. Project leads reported that 12 major development projects have been completed under the Quetta Development Package, while seven remain under construction to revamp the provincial capital amid ongoing regional instability.

An open letter addressed to BRICS member states was issued on behalf of the self-declared "Republic of Balochistan" by exiled Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch.

BRICS Summit Agenda: The letter formally appeals to member nations to place the "Question of Balochistan" on the official agenda for the summit.

Diplomatic Recognition: Bypassing Islamabad entirely, the document seeks official diplomatic recognition for an independent Baloch state.

Embassy in New Delhi: It requests permission to establish a formal Baloch embassy on Indian soil.

A Seat at the Table: The letter asks for Balochistan to be granted a seat or observer status within the BRICS architecture, positioning in the region as an independent economic entity.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:

Following a marathon 24-hour raid that concluded early on September 8, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) reported detecting alleged financial irregularities worth around ₹60 crore. The investigation targeted an Urdu newspaper heavily linked to Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque. Officials confirmed that financial logs and digital documents were seized for deeper analysis.

At least three devotees were killed and fifteen others injured after a pickup vehicle carrying pilgrims collided with a canter truck on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway near Mandothi village in the early hours of Tuesday.

In Uttar Pradesh – On September 7, 2026, at around 12:30 am, a tragic accident occurred on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. The vehicle involved was a heavily loaded makeshift passenger pickup van carrying 32 pilgrims returning from Rajasthan to Budaun, rather than a standard passenger bus. It hit a divider and overturned, resulting in 12 deaths and over 20 injuries.
