Today September 17 — Several parts of India are observing
Vishwakarma Puja today, with local holidays and celebrations varying by state

Sanjukta Parashar Becomes First Woman to Head CRPF CoBRA.
Sanjukta Parashar, a 2006-batch Indian Police Service officer of the
Assam-Meghalaya cadre, became the first woman officer to head the Central
Reserve Police Force’s CoBRA unit in September 2026. She took charge as
Inspector General of the 10-battalion CoBRA formation from 1996-batch IPS
officer Danesh Rana.
CoBRA stands for Commando Battalion for Resolute Action
and functions as the specialized jungle warfare and anti-Naxal unit of the
Central Reserve Police Force.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the fifth
edition of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi today. The event will
bring together over 600 exhibitors, 300 international companies, and
delegations from more than 50 countries.
The PM Vishwakarma scheme was launched on 17 September
2023 for artisans and craftspeople engaged in 18 traditional trades. The scheme
has a financial outlay of ₹13,000 crore for FY2023-24 to FY2027-28 and provides
support through skill training, toolkits, credit, and market linkage measures.
Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, along with Minister of
State for Jal Shakti V Somanna and Minister of State for Housing and Urban
Affairs Tokhan Sahu, yesterday launched the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign. The
theme of this campaign is Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.
BJP will run a month-long nationwide Seva Sankalp Abhiyan
from today to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, with a focus on
highlighting his commitment to public service and encouraging people,
particularly the youth, to undertake acts of service. The campaign will also
mark 25 years of Mr. Modi taking oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat on
October 7, 2001.
The Government introduced an exemption from the
requirement of Registration-cum-Membership Certificate or Certificate of
Registration for small-value export consignments up to three lakh rupees.
The Union Cabinet has approved the increase in the wage
ceiling for mandatory coverage under the Employees Provident Fund Organization
from 15 thousand rupees to 25 thousand rupees per month.
Delhi has been ranked top performer in States and UT in
Electric Mobility adoption as per the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI)
2025. The Index was released by the NITI Aayog in New Delhi yesterday, which
outlines both the policy framework and implementation outcomes for e-mobility
at the sub-national level.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
launched the India Net Zero Portal and the National Action Plan on Climate
Change Dashboard on 16 September 2026 in Mumbai on World Ozone Day 2026.
Kumik village in
Zanskar was declared Ladakh’s first designated Heritage Village on 15 September
2026. The declaration was made during the launch of the Ladakh Zanskar Festival
2026.
The National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development
Corporation (NSTFDC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) signed
a Memorandum of Understanding on 15 September 2026 for integrated computer
labs-cum-smart classrooms in 29 functional Eklavya Model Residential Schools
(EMRS) in Rajasthan.

100% Census Phase-1 Completion: Chief Minister Shuvendu
Adhikari announced that West Bengal successfully hit 100% completion of its
Census Phase-1 fieldwork ahead of schedule, covering 3.68 crore households

Kharagpur Additional SP Bushra Bano was abruptly transferred to the West Bengal

The government has declared Pakistan-based Shahzad Bhatti
Network as a terrorist organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention)
Act (UAPA). The terrorist group is involved in smuggling of arms, explosives
and narcotics across borders, apart from inciting youths and petty criminals
into terrorism. The Union Home Ministry has issued gazette notification in this
regard.
India has expressed deep concern at the drone attack near
Makkah in Saudi Arabia. Responding to media queries regarding the drone attack,
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, India reiterates
its condemnation of attacks on the sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia and of actions that endanger civilian lives and infrastructure.
The External Affairs Ministry today summoned the Charge d’Affaires
of the High Commission of Pakistan in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest
over the unacceptable conduct of Pakistani naval units at sea, which led to a
collision with a unit of the Indian Navy.
New Zealand’s Parliament has passed legislation to
implement its free trade agreement with India, paving the way for significant

Oman Talks Postponed: A critical diplomatic meeting
hosted by Oman aimed at reopening the blockaded Strait of Hormuz was postponed

Escalation in Saudi Arabia & Yemen-Mecca Alert: The
Saudi-led coalition announced it intercepted a Houthi drone targeting the holy
city of Mecca. While the Yemeni Houthi rebels denied the strike—calling it a

Energy Disruptions: Oil prices temporarily fluctuated

newly released U.S. Department of Defense report shows the war cost $33.4

NEPAL FLASH FLOOD:
Surging Missing Count: Following extensive verification
from district offices, the officially recorded number of missing individuals
jumped by nearly 1,000 in a single day—rising from 5,179 to 6,150. Among the
missing are 587 foreigners.
Body Recovery & Identification: The confirmed death
toll in Nepal reached 1,403. However, authorities revealed that only 7% of
recovered bodies (105 individuals) have been identified and handed over to
families. Mass DNA sampling is underway, with over 1,206 samples collected from
victims to assist grieving relatives.
Cross-Border Casualties: Across the border in Tibet
(China's Xizang region), the toll holds at 43 dead and 519 missing (including
261 foreigners), bringing the combined bilateral disaster toll to 1,446 dead
and over 6,660 missing.
Powerhouse Recovery: In the hard-hit Rasuwa district, a
joint military rescue team broke through mud and rock to clear a 1,050-metre
access route into the flooded tunnel of the Chilime Hydropower Project.
No Survivors in Powerhouse: Rescuers reached the underground
powerhouse but found no survivors, extricating the mortal remains of 5 workers
who had been trapped since the initial debris flow.
Economic Toll: The catastrophic destruction of the
Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors has crippled the nation's energy
outlook, with the total post-disaster reconstruction bill estimated at $4.78
billion.
UN General Assembly Focus: In light of the disaster,
Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced he will travel to the United
Nations General Assembly next week to deliver a key address demanding
international financial backing and climate justice for vulnerable Himalayan
nations.

The Khuzdar Camp Attack & Militant Movements-Fatal
Ambush in Arenji: Heavy automatic gunfire broke out in the remote Arenji area
of Khuzdar’s Wadh tehsil when a group of armed men on motorcycles raided a
private security post. The post guarded the residence of pro-government tribal
elder Mir Shafique-ur-Rehman Mengal.
Policeman Executed: The attackers killed four private
security guards at the scene and abducted a local police officer. His body was
recovered approximately 1.5 kilometers away shortly after the raid. Ethnic
Baloch separatists are strongly suspected due to prior attempts on Mengal’s
life.
Pro-Government Base Destroyed: Simultaneously, the
insurgent group Baloch Republican Guards (BRG) officially claimed
responsibility for a separate offensive in the Mithal Abad area of Kachhi
district. The BRG stated it burned down a localized "death squad"
camp operating under regional ministerial patronage and detained one militia
member.
Laborer Hostages Released: In a rare diplomatic
resolution, five non-native truck drivers from Punjab who had been intercepted
and abducted at gunpoint in Killa Abdullah were safely handed over to a council
of local tribal elders following successful mediated negotiations.

Minors Drown in Lake Near Hyderabad During Ganesh Idol Immersion. Eight boys
staying at a hostel run by a charitable trust at Pedda Kanjarla village, fell
into the lake during the immersion, police said. While two managed to come out,
six others drowned. It is suspected that lose mud in the lake led to the
tragedy.
At
least 21 people have been killed, including eight children, after a war-damaged
building collapsed in the Gaza Strip overnight.

Two earthquakes struck Nepal’s northwestern Mugu district
within three hours early yesterday morning. There were no immediate reports of
casualties or damage.
WEATHER:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast
heavy rainfall over Bihar, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu
and parts of North East India. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied
by lightning and gusty winds over Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh,
Punjab, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat today.

recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024.
