The TMC faction led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission of India's (ECI) order
freezing the party's traditional symbol. Hours earlier, the ECI allotted
entirely new names and distinct symbols to the two warring factions—one led by
Mamata Banerjee and the other by Ritabrata Banerjee.
Leaders from the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction (now
assigned the name 'Democratic Trinamool Congress' with an 'envelope' symbol)
announced that the ECI's freeze is a temporary measure for the by polls. They
asserted that they have effectively "saved the iconic grass and twin
flower symbol from disgrace".
The ECI informed the Supreme Court that over 37 lakh voter
appeals arising out of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) are currently trapped
in 19 Appellate Tribunals across West Bengal. Only about 1.02 lakh appeals have
been cleared so far, leaving the status of millions of voters uncertain even as
Municipal elections draw near.
Chief Minister Adhikari announced a major upgrade plan to
convert 300 police stations across West Bengal into modern "Model
Stations". The upgrades will include expanding physical infrastructure to
add playgrounds and gyms for personnel wherever land space permits.
Kolkata Water Shortage Crisis: Tensions are mounting in
North Kolkata's Cossipore area, where over 5,000 residents of the Jyoti Nagar
colony have gone 52 consecutive days without drinking water. The residents
allege bias as five public taps remain completely dry following pipeline work
executed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

NEPAL FLASH FLOOD:
Death toll from the catastrophic flash floods in Nepal has
climbed to 1,410 confirmed dead, with 6,145 people still missing.
Casualties & Identification: According to the latest
update from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority
(NDRRMA), recovered bodies include 549 males, 336 females, and 525 unidentified
remains. Over 1,200 DNA samples have been collected to help identify the deceased.
Foreigners &
Tourists Missing: Among the missing are 587 foreign nationals, including
hundreds of tourists who were in the trekking zones of Rasuwa and Nuwakot when
the disaster struck.
Rescue Operations: Joint security personnel have
successfully rescued 13,756 people from steep mountain ridges and isolated
pockets. Rescue efforts continue to be hampered by thick mud up to 8 meters
deep and damaged infrastructure.
Infrastructure Havoc: The floods destroyed 19 major bridges,
40 kilometers of roads, and heavily damaged 12 hydropower plants in the
Trishuli River basin, knocking out over 10% of Nepal's power capacity.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:
The Supreme Court reaffirmed that banks and NBFCs must
follow due process and RBI guidelines when repossessing financed vehicles.
Banks cannot forcibly seize vehicles for loan defaults and harassment cannot be
used for recovery.
The Delhi High Court today ordered that no victory
procession should be taken out after the declaration of results of Delhi
University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.
