World Rhino Day was observed
yesterday across the world, including India, to raise awareness about
protecting the five remaining rhinoceroses’ species. This year’s theme, “Keep
the Five Alive,” calls for stronger efforts to protect rhino habitats,
prevent poaching and curb the illegal trade in rhino horn. |
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced biennial
elections for five seats in the 78-member Maharashtra Legislative Council.
Polling will be held on 23rd October, while counting of votes will take place
on 27th October.
The Election Commission announced the biennial elections for
11 Rajya Sabha seats. This includes ten seats in Uttar Pradesh and one seat in
Uttarakhand.
Twenty-one states and Union Territories have signed

Kurmi Community Cases: The state government has initiated
the withdrawal of agitation cases filed against Kurmi activists during their
previous protests demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Mega Projects Confirmed: Chief Minister Adhikari met with
high-profile industry leaders in Mumbai, including Reliance Industries Chairman
Mukesh Ambani and Aditya Birla Group's Kumar Mangalam Birla. A 2,000-bed
hospital project backed by the Adani Group is slated to break ground in
Kolkata's New Town.
Civil Aviation Expansion: The central government is
reviewing a plan to establish four new airports in West Bengal. This initiative
relies on the state government facilitating land handovers to convert the
Kalaikunda and Hasimara Indian Air Force (IAF) bases into commercial enclaves.
Infrastructure & Education Restructuring--Zero-Enrolment
School Conversion: The West Bengal Education Department has ordered a physical
verification of 933 government primary and secondary schools that have recorded
zero student enrolment over the last few years. Under a public-private
partnership (PPP) framework, these idle buildings and playgrounds will be
repurposed into healthcare centers, community halls, or animal husbandry
training units.
Madrasa Closures: The state administration issued closure
notices to 252 madrasas across the state. Officials cited a lack of formal
regulatory approvals and inadequate basic physical infrastructure as the
primary reasons for the shutdowns.
Kalighat-TMC to operate three primary bank accounts that had
previously been frozen during ongoing state investigations.

Indian High Commission Cautions Nationals Against Seeking
Jobs in Malaysia on Tourist Visa: The
Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has cautioned Indian nationals
travelling to Malaysia on tourist visas against taking up employment. In an
advisory, the High Commission said that there is a noticeable increase in
Indian nationals arriving in Malaysia using the 30-day visa-free facility to
seek employment. Many Indian nationals are misled by unscrupulous agents with
false job promises, leading to overstay, illegal status, exploitation, detention,
and legal action. This is how the facilities are
suspended due to abuse.

Google has been fined 403 million euros by Ireland’s Data
Protection Commission for breaking strict European Union privacy rules
regarding how it tracks people. Regulators found that between 2018 and 2020,
Google unlawfully tracked and processed users’ location information through
three main features, its Web & App Activity settings, its Location History
mapping tool, and the Location Accuracy feature built into the Android
operating system. Do India also do this?

Saudi Arabia Reportedly Restarts East-West Pipeline. The
crucial pipeline, which was shut down after drone attacks, has resumed
operations, three unnamed sources told Reuters.
United Kingdom to Provide Defensive Air Support to Saudi
Arabia. Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the country would deploy a
military aircraft for several weeks to help refuel Saudi jets, to help combat
Houthi forces.

In Bihar’s Jamui district, police have arrested five
accused, including the main accused, Nandan Yadav, in with the alleged
molestation and misbehavior with a minor girl. National Commission for Women
has written to Director General of Police Preeti Verma, seeking a detailed
action-taken report within seven days. LAW IS
BEING ENFORCED.
The Uttar Pradesh government has carried out a major
administrative reshuffle, transferring 34 IAS officers last night. District
Magistrates of 14 districts have also been changed.
The Government has debunked several videos circulating on
social media claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made announcements
related to the purchase of old notes and coins. The Fact Check Unit of the
Press Information Bureau said that these videos are fake and have been created
using Artificial Intelligence technology.
Government has urged
bank employees to refrain from resorting to strikes, work towards resolving
issues through dialogue, and ensure that banking services remain uninterrupted.
The Indian government has amended the Legal Metrology
(Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 to require origin-based symbols on selected
personal care products. The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth
Amendment Rules, 2026 were notified on 21 September 2026 and came into force on
publication in the Official Gazette.
The amended rules require a green dot for products of
vegetarian origin and a red or brown dot for products of non-vegetarian origin.
The symbols must be placed at the top of the principal display panel on
packages of soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, cosmetics, and toiletries. THE DOT SHALL BE LARGE ENOUGH & NOT HIDDEN.
MISHAPS:

The fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU)
at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Telangana's Adilabad.
It is reportedly linked to a suspected short circuit in an AC unit. Three
newborns died and two others are in critical condition. Twenty-two other babies
were safely evacuated.
WEATHER:
Heavy rainfall and high-velocity winds are expected to
impact several districts in West Bengal through Friday, due to a well-marked
deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.

PM Modi has congratulated the Women’s Cricket Team on
winning the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026, being held in Nagoya, Japan.
The Indian Women’s Cricket team reasserted its continental
dominance by clinching a second successive gold medal at the Asian Games,
thrashing Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final at Nisshin in Japan today. Opting
to bat, India posted 216 for the loss of three wickets in the stipulated 20
overs, the highest total in Asian Games history, riding on Smriti Mandhana’s 79
runs off 45 balls and Richa Ghosh’s 48 off 22. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled
out for just 69 in 15.4 overs. This is India’s first gold medal at the ongoing
Asiad and overall, seventh medal.
TECHNOLOGY:
State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) made gas
discovery in the deepwater basin of Mahanadi in Odisha, which is the first-ever
discovery from a well drilled by the company in line with its Samudra Manthan Programme.
ONGC declared the discovery on September 18 through the well named
MN-DW18-1-H-D. This well has been drilled to the targeted depth of 1,623 meters
with gas presence found in between 1,441 meters and 1,452 meters. Encouraging
gas flow was found during the initial tests along with reservoir pressure.
Quantum and Computing Hardware Breakthrough: Shrinking
Tabletop Lasers to Microchips: Researchers at EPFL successfully shrunk a
powerful tabletop-sized femtosecond laser onto a tiny microchip. This
breakthrough performs on par with traditional large-scale lasers and is
expected to drastically downsize medical equipment, optical sensors, and
telecommunications devices.

The Heikru Hidongba festival, popularly known as the
