EC CONTROVERSY:

On Saturday, September 26, the ECI released a statement and photograph showing all three commissioners meeting at Nirvachan Sadan, downplaying the rift as standard "internal discussions”, and asserting that key decisions were ultimately finalized unanimously.

‘Reaffirms integrity, credibility’: TDP chief welcomes 'unanimous EC clarification' day after BJP allies' appeal. The BJP ally said the EC's clarification “put to rest all the misconceptions” surrounding the commission. Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday hailed the "unanimous" clarification issued by the Election Commission amid row over alleged dissent with the poll body.

Mr. Shameek Bhattacharyya proposed a ‘National award ‘to felicitate Chief Election Commissioner.

The Maharashtra government officially declared a state of drought across 75% of its districts following a severe rainfall deficit. 265 of its 358 talukas are drought-affected as on 26 September 2026. The affected talukas account for about 74% of the state’s total landmass. The declaration followed a rainfall deficit of 18.8% between 1 June and 18 September 2026 linked with El Niño conditions.

Chief Minister Mann has convened an urgent state-level cabinet meeting today to discuss strict implementations and legal structures surrounding the Sacrilege Act.

India’s federal power ministry issued a directive on 25 September 2026 for more than 100 captive coal-fired power plants to maximize generation from 1 October to 31 December 2026. The order applies to captive plants with an installed capacity of at least 50 megawatts and uses emergency powers under Section 11 of the Electricity Act.

Special Campaign 6.0:  Government ministries and departments are undertaking preparatory activities for Special Campaign 6.0, with a focus on cleanliness and improving workplace efficiency.

ICAR-CIRB organized Swachhata Samvat to promote cleanliness and public participation.

According to the Indian Ports Act, 2025, four ports have been declared as mega ports in India by government. This was done by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways by way of notification dated September 25, 2026. The four mega ports include Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), Paradip Port and Mundra Port.

BENGAL FILES:

Police Reshuffle: The West Bengal government transferred 23 IPS and West Bengal Police Service officers in a major administrative reshuffle. Notable transfers include STF IGP Sudheer Kumar Neelakantam moving to Additional Commissioner of Police, Kolkata.

Municipal Elections Timeline: State Election Commissioner Krishna Gupta announced after a district magistrates' meeting that municipal elections are planned for the end of November 2026, with official notifications expected by late October.

Revenue Improvements Urged: State Finance Minister Dr. Swapan Dasgupta highlighted that West Bengal lags in revenue generation. Speaking at an event organized by the West Bengal Revenue Service Officers' Association, he stressed eliminating past discriminatory collection practices and noted the critical financial health of most state municipalities.

Flood Committee Formed: An expert committee has been constituted to examine recurring flood vulnerabilities impacting mountain rivers like the Teesta and Torsa. The panel will also evaluate drainage and structural planning for urban developments across Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars.

India raises Gulf shipping security at UN:  External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the UN General Assembly that attacks targeting commercial ships and seafarers in international waters are unacceptable.

Russia backs India's UNSC bid. Russia has expressed support for India's permanent membership of the UN Security Council, adding to international backing for India's long-standing reform demand.

India and Liberia launched the “Group of Friends on Safety & Security of Shipping & Seafarers” in New York on 25 September 2026. The initiative was announced during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week, and India and Liberia will serve as co-chairs of the group.

World Tourism Day is observed on 27 September with the 2026 theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.” Tourism contributed 5.22% of India’s GDP and supported 8.46 crore jobs in 2023–24.

France to Send Soldiers to Protect Saudi Arabia Port. French President Emmanuel Macron announced yesterday that French forces and other military assets would be deployed to Saudi Arabia to protect energy infrastructure along the Red Sea.

NEPAL: --At the UN General Assembly in New York, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah delivered a powerful maiden speech stating the global order is "broken". He declared that Nepal is being severely punished by a climate crisis it did not cause, pointing out that glacier areas in the country have shrunk by 32% over 40 years.

GULF WAR:

US President Donald Trump says he has rejected Iran’s proposal of a seven-day roadmap to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and resume nuclear talks.

Iran’s ⁠Foreign ⁠Minister Abbas Araghchi says ⁠that Tehran has seen Trump’s reaction to its proposal but has yet to receive a formal response through mediators.

⁠Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian tells Al Jazeera that those who “thought they could target the Iranian people with sanctions miscalculated”. Pezeshkian added that Qatar and Pakistan have been relaying Tehran’s messages to the US.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a world power, will never allow America to return to its previous position in the new world order,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted Sardar Shekarchi, chief spokesman of Iran’s armed forces as saying.

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, addressing the UN General Assembly, called on the international community to condemn Houthi actions against the kingdom and in Yemen.

Yemeni Government Forces say that the Houthis are utilizing Iranian air defense weapons that pose a danger to all aircraft travelling through local and international airspace.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:

*Child sexual-abuse cases cannot be settled privately*:  The Delhi High Court refused to quash a rape and POCSO case based on a family settlement, holding that offences against children cannot simply be withdrawn through compromise.

The Supreme Court said that just because a property case is pending in court, it does not make illegal land use legal.

Authorities can act, including sealing the property, if it is being used against approved rules. However, authorities must apply the rules equally and cannot target only selected properties.

The Chief Justice of India said that drug abuse among children should be viewed not only as a public health issue but also as a matter of child protection

Supreme Court Ticket Ruling: In a crucial legal precedent, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the lack of a physical ticket found on a deceased passenger cannot be used to deny railway compensation claims. The bench clarified that a claim shouldn't be defeated if circumstantial evidence establishes the victim as a bona fide traveler. SC did its job.

CBI arrested an Ahmedabad-based man for running an elaborate international tech-support scam that defrauded United States citizens of over $7 million.

Authorities officially reopened the 2020 death investigation of Bollywood celebrity manager Disha Salian, as new forensic and circumstantial evidence refutes the original accidental death ruling.

MISHAPS: -

A powerful, unseasonal storm with very heavy downpours and lightning strikes swept through Uttar Pradesh, killing 10 people and injuring 17 others.

In Chhattisgarh: Six members of a DJ band were killed and seven injured after a wheat-laden 16-wheeler rammed into their stationary mini vehicle at Markatola Ghat on National Highway-30 in Balod district on Friday morning, dragging it for nearly 30 meters before overturning.

WEATHER:

IMD has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand, predicting extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Sunday, September 26. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh.

ORISSA is also facing heavy rain, but it will improve.
