FLYDUBAI FLIGHT FZ1073: CNN, CBS NEWS, REUTER

The investigation into the motive of the unnamed Omani co-pilot who attacked Captain Smit Machchhar on Flydubai Flight FZ1073 is ongoing. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Israel are conducting joint intelligence and security probes.

Investigators are heavily pursuing a jihadist terror angle based on the following key developments:

• Radical Islamist Indoctrination: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that an initial review of the co-pilot's personal information strongly indicates he underwent radical Islamist indoctrination. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar explicitly labeled it a "jihadist terror attack" aimed at derailing Israel-UAE diplomatic relations and the Abraham Accords.

• Social media Anti-Semitism: Investigators uncovered posts on the co-pilot's social media accounts that directly expressed a desire to "kill Jews," pointing toward a planned hate crime or targeted terror attack.

• Intent to Crash (Suicidal Intent): Flight tracking data showed the aircraft plunged 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds over Saudi Arabia. Investigators state that the co-pilot deliberately jammed the controls to bring down the jet rather than commandeer it. Witnesses also noted that after being overpowered, the co-pilot repeatedly yelled for someone to kill him.

• Lone Wolf vs. Wider Network: The UAE state news agency reported that their security teams are probing whether the incident involved prior external direction or links to established militant organizations. While current evaluations lean toward a lone-wolf attack, U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies are evaluating any potential state-backed connections, including probing for any links to Iran.

Following an initial detention in Saudi Arabia, the co-pilot was officially transferred to the UAE via an Emirati security team for deeper interrogation and psychological evaluation.

Key Details of the Incident and Condition

• Injuries: Captain Machchhar suffered serious stab and/or axe wounds during the mid-air altercation with his Omani co-pilot.

• Current Status: The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia and official statements confirm he is recovering and in stable condition.

• Actions Taken: Despite bleeding heavily and fighting for control, he managed to unlock the cockpit door and send out emergency distress signals (squawking 7500) before passengers and off-duty pilots intervened to subdue the attacker and safely land the aircraft in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
