Bye-elections to five Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and West Bengal, along with one Lok Sabha constituency in Assam will be held today. Counting of votes will take place on Friday.

The 19th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) Convention is scheduled to take place in Kolkata, West Bengal, during January 7 to 9, 2027. The three-day convention will be hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) along with the West Bengal Government.

Government of Uttar Pradesh has renamed the Bhadohi district to Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi, with the inauguration of the developmental projects worth more than ₹1,340 crore.

Four new airports will be developed in West Bengal over the next two years to strengthen air connectivity in the state. airports would be developed at Charra in Purulia, Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur, Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur and Hasimara in Alipurduar.

Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the first international cargo vessel since Independence carrying methanol from Assam’s Dibrugarh to Bangladesh. The move marks the revival of the Brahmaputra as an international trade route after nearly eight decades and is expected to provide the Northeast with a direct, greener, and more cost-effective trade corridor.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said the state government had launched a ₹30,156-crore Programme to provide safe drinking water through household taps across Andhra Pradesh, with a focus on long-term water security in rural areas.

At a state secretariat Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Adhikari announced the formal approval of 14,454 new government posts to be filled within the next six to eight months via the Public Service Commission and State Police Recruitment Board.

Bhagini Nivedita Scheme Launched: The Cabinet officially passed the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme, which will provide Rs 50,000 in financial assistance to unmarried women pursuing higher education over a three-year period. Additionally, the state increased monthly pay for part-time support staff (Karmabandhus) from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, and bumped up food allowances for SC/ST hostel students.

New Textile Hub Planned: State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul announced a comprehensive blueprint to establish a centralized textile hub in West Bengal. The initiative aims to connect local artisans specializing in Fulia handloom, Baluchari, and Murshidabad silk directly with international exporters.

A major student convention featuring the All-India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora took place at Jadavpur University.

The government has officially ended its active search-and-rescue operations following the catastrophic August 26 flash floods originating near the Tibet border. The disaster left at least 1,455 dead and 5,285 people missing.

Nepal is pivoting toward a massive Rs 559 billion ($5 billion to $7 billion) recovery and rehabilitation effort. Due to the thousands still missing, authorities are setting up legal processes to declare them deceased so grieving families can process insurance and banking claims. Meanwhile, more than 3,600 forensic samples are undergoing extensive DNA testing to identify recovered remains.

In response to the high-altitude glacial and rock collapses that triggered the disaster, Nepal has announced a six-year, $50 million project to drain four high-risk glacial lakes to prevent future sudden dam breaches. Forex Limits Hiked: The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has significantly relaxed foreign exchange and transaction regulations to boost business. The bank guarantee threshold for service imports was doubled to $30,000 USD, and the payment cap for transactions involving India was raised from 4 million to 6 million Indian rupees.

For freelancers and online service exporters, the NRB doubled the allowable foreign currency balance on cards to $10,000 USD and vastly expanded their annual online international purchase limit from $500 to $10,000 USD.

BLA Claims Massive Campaign against Security Forces: The separatist militant group, the Baluchistan Liberation Army (BLA), released an operational update declaring a significant surge in their activities. The group claimed responsibility for executing 94 attacks during the month of September alone, which they state resulted in the deaths of over 100 Pakistani personnel, severe vehicular damage, and the widespread use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) across the province.

Karachi Airport Blast Targets Chinese Convoy: Late on October 6, a massive explosion targeted a convoy carrying Chinese workers near Karachi's international airport. The BLA claimed responsibility for the suicide vehicle-borne attack. Initial reports indicate that at least two Chinese citizens were killed and multiple others were injured. The workers were employees of the Port Qasim Electric Power Company.

Security has been beefed up around Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in the national capital ahead of a scheduled march by opposition parties on Tuesday.

The Election Commission of India has rejected the allegations of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi that the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has changed Form 6 of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) illegally and unilaterally.

Form 6 / Election Commission: The Supreme Court has sought records from the Election Commission regarding decisions and changes concerning Form 6, used for voter registration. The Court indicated that unlawful decisions could have consequences.

CJI clarifies Form 6: Chief Justice Surya Kant said the Supreme Court did not approve any modified version of Form 6.

Jammu and Kashmir has initiated the deportation of Bangladeshi nationals found illegally residing in the region. A survey identified approximately 600 Bangladeshi nationals illegally staying across various districts in J&K.

Mumbai, Maharashtra — BEST Bus Depot Fire: A major fire at the Anik bus depot in Sion on 5 October destroyed 10 parked CNG buses and damaged two others. No casualties were reported.

Hingoli, Maharashtra — Firecracker Explosion: At least 2 people died and 12 were injured after a fire broke out in a house where firecrackers were reportedly stored. The explosions spread to neighboring houses, and rescue operations were underway.
