Pak Lawyer Tries to Prove Their Innocence In 88-Year-Old Case.

The Lahore police last week submitted in a Pakistan trial court the first information report (FIR) registered in the murder of British police official John Saunders (also known as the Lahore conspiracy case) claiming that the case was registered against "unidentified" persons. The court handed over a copy of the FIR to Lahore-based advocate and petitioner cum lawyer Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, who is chairman of the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation .

Qureshi has also moved the Lahore High Court seeking reopening of the Saunders' murder case to prove that Bhagat Singh was "innocent".

On the court's order  the Lahore police searched through the records of the Anarkali Police Station and managed to find the FIR in the Saunders' murder case.

"Written in Urdu, the FIR was registered at 4.30 p.m. on December 17, 1928, against two unknown gunmen. The names of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru are nowhere in the FIR," said Qureshi.

Special judges of the Tribunal handling Bhagat Singh's case awarded him the death sentence without hearing the 450 witnesses in the case. "The martyr's lawyers were not even given the opportunity to cross-question them. Therefore, I want to establish Bhagat Singh's innocence in the Saunders case," he further said.

My only worry to above—I hope there is no confession crop up in the investigation from any of the MARTYRS—fact, or false. That will lead to some complications.

I have the complete list of the witnesses involved in the above case, and their false stories, and affidavits, and rewards—but that I will discuss some other time.

Qureshi's Foundation earlier filed a petition in the Lahore High Court to rename Lahore's Shadman Chowk -- the spot which was once a part of Lahore Jail where the trio were hanged by the British -- as 'Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk'. The court in September last year directed the Lahore district administration to decide on the renaming of the roundabout.

History tells us that the three young men showed neither remorse nor fear while they were being taken to the gallows at Lahore Central Jail, but happily embraced death, shouting ‘Inqilab Zindabad’.

In fact, the song “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola,” meaning “O Mother! Dye My Robe the Colour of Spring” gave birth to one of the greatest and glorious freedom songs.. He was said to have marched to the hangman’s chamber with this song on his lips. For him death in the cause of freedom was like a celebration.

Bhagat Singh was born on 27 September 1907 at the village of Banga, Lyallpur district (now in Pakistan) the second son of Kishan Singh and Vidya Vati. Bhagat Singh was imbued from childhood with the family’s spirit of patriotism. At the time of his birth, his father was in jail for his connection with the Canal Colonization Bill agitation, in which his brother, Ajit Singh (Bhagat Singh’s uncle), took a leading part. Through his father, who was a sympathizer and supporter of the Ghadar movement of 1914-15, Bhagat Singh became an admirer of the leaders of the movement. The execution of Kartar Singh Sarabha made a deep impression on the mind of the young man who vowed to dedicate his life to the country.

In 1950, after Independence, the land where Bhagat Singh and his companions were cremated was procured from Pakistan and a memorial built. In March 1961, a Shahidi Mela was held there. Every year, on 23 March, the martyr’s memory is similarly honoured. The old memorial, destroyed in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, has been rebuilt.

Bhagat Singh is remembered by the endearing title of Shahid-e-Azam, the greatest of martyrs.

  1. Why this almost 100 years old case taken up in a Pakistan Court by a Pakistani Lawyer is a little mind boggling
