TERRORISM  IN JAMMU

ACTIVITIES ARE ENHANCED RECENTLY

SARASIJ MAJUMDER

Captain Brijesh Thapa, 3-Army jawans and a policeman were killed one day ago in a terrorist attack in Jammu’s Doda area.

Kashmir Tigers, a front of Jaise-e-Mohammad has taken the responsibility of this attack.

We suffered from a few more attacks by terrorists and deaths of our defence personnel  in recent past in Jammu region.

Civilian deaths were  also not less.

As usual, we have begun pointing fingers at Pakistan for this latest terrorist attacks. This is just like the famous Pavlov syndrome, which I don’t want to explain further. But have we truly understood or tried to understand why are so many attacks happening recently  in Jammu?

TIMELINE OF MAJOR TERROR ATTACKS IN J&K—Last  9 Months:-

July 16, 2024: Four Army soldiers were killed in action in Doda.

July 8, 2024: Five Army personnel were killed in action and five others injured in an attack on a military convoy in Kathua district.
June 11-12, 2024: Six soldiers were injured in twin attacks.

June 9, 2024: Nine people were killed and 33 injured after terrorists attacked a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi.
May 4, 2024: One soldier of the Indian Air Force was killed and five others injured in Poonch district.
December 21, 2023: Four soldiers killed in action.
November 22, 2023: Five soldiers, including two captains, were killed in action.

IN ALL,  48 ARMED PERSONNELS ARE KILLED IN LAST 32MONTHS,AS REPORTED IN VARIOUS NEWSPAPERS.

THE ANALYSIS:-

1.0 All these years, we focused heavily, and rightly so, only  on Kashmir Valley. We posted more than 100,000 troops in Srinagar, Sopore, Anantnag, Pulwama and other districts of the Valley. The assumption was that terrorists found refuge in the heavily Muslim dominated regions  of  Kashmir valley. VERY CORRECT. And at the same time, the terrorists were also finding it difficult to continue in K valley.

2.0 Meanwhile, these terrorists were shifting silently to the heavily wooded areas of Jammu region, which is also close by to operate. While Jammu is a primarily Hindu region, a good percentage of some of  these areas’ population is made of Muslims, and  they are not friendly to India. Therefore, dense forests and Muslim shelters, assistance, and logistics support  available have helped terrorists in Jammu region to undertake their activities with better success rate. The terrain is also helping..

3.0 Major General Bakshi says there is a vacancy of more than 100,000 jawan-level positions in Indian Army which haven’t been filled up since the outbreak of Covid-19. In fact, he accuses the government of being casual towards filling these positions. Mr. Bakshi says the Modi Government cares more about finances than national security.

4.0 Terrorists have taken advantage of this huge shortfall of men,  and the large GAP  in Jammu. Some Army officers have said this shortfall is also because many troops were shifted from Jammu to Ladakh after the Galwan violence. “This is the cause, my soul!”

WHAT EMERGE:

While it’s easy to blame PAKISTAN, and scream at Government for these terrorist attacks, does it help really?. PM has taken a high level review recently.  Let’s give GOI and his team a chance to manage the security situation in Jammu. There isn't any other alternative really.

Jai Hind!
