• High-Stakes By polls: Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly constituencies, saw a heavy voter turnout exceeding 70%. On October 8, the state Congress president demanded a cancellation of the by-elections, alleging widespread "vote theft" and calling for fresh polling. Results are eagerly anticipated on October 9.

• Supreme Court Deadline on MLA Disqualifications: October 8 serves as the targeted deadline set by the Supreme Court for the West Bengal Assembly Speaker to decide on disqualification petitions against 10 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs belonging to the Ritabrata Banerjee faction. Concurrently, 20 Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) MPs facing similar TMC anti-defection petitions in New Delhi have requested a fresh extension from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

• Mithun Chakraborty Appointed State Advisor: The government announced that veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as an advisor to the West Bengal Government's Information and Cultural Affairs Department, holding the status of a Cabinet Minister.

• Mega Mahalaya Event at Eden Gardens: The new BJP-led state government, headed by Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari, is preparing a grand Mahalaya celebration at Eden Gardens scheduled for October 10. However, reports indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to skip the event.

Jordan condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s Abha and King Khalid international airports, where at least three foreign nationals were killed, according to Saudi authorities.

Yemen’s government forces said they carried out 2,103 strikes against Houthi military targets as part of the “Dawn of Yemen” operation, claiming 1,860 Houthi fighters were “neutralized”.

BALUCHISTAN: The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) released data showing that Baluchistan experienced a massive 47% surge in militant attacks in September, logging 131 incidents that resulted in 135 deaths.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR against the OSD to the Punjab Chief Minister (CM), Rajbir Ghuman, and his associates in a case of Cash for Transfers and manipulating postings of officers, including IAS and IPS rank officers and other corruption cases to investigate these allegations.

Punjab elections: The Supreme Court has set aside elections in 50 Punjab municipal wards because of serious irregularities and ordered fresh elections within six weeks.

MISHAPS: -

The death toll after a Nigerian military plane flying from Benin City to Lagos crashed has climbed to 32. The 32 victims comprised 25 passengers and seven crew members.

ENVIRONMENTAL: -

MONSOON is withdrawing from Indian Peninsula.

WEATHER:

• Weather & Monsoon Retreat: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Forecasters report that the southwest monsoon is currently retreating from the region, a process expected to conclude between October 8 and 14.

India’s 2036 Olympic bid: India is among the countries competing to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The bid is part of a broader plan to strengthen India’s sports infrastructure and international sporting profile. The IOC is expected to select the host in 2029.

Athletes from the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune, won 12 medals at the Asian Games, accounting for 60 per cent of the 20 medals won by Indian Army athletes. A total of 25 ASI athletes were part of the Indian contingent.
